Let's start with biometric attendance for both, faculty and students. And no relaxation from the BCI mandated attendance percentage. As for 'useless research papers', surely you have got excellent papers of your own that are widely cited and acknowledged by the experts, for you to judge the quality of others' work. There are many academics and teachers who work round the clock and keep themselves available for students. This is not a 10-5 job. As for automatic promotion, there's no such thing. There are scores that need to be obtained every academic year and interviews which are held for all UGC-prescribed promotions. Given the sheer ignorance that you display, it's a wonder you have learnt anything at all, within the university or beyond.

The Lokpal should have 75% private sector representation: eminent people like Kiran Mazumdar Shah, who don’t need to leech off the taxpayer for goodies, unlike govt officers. 1. I agree. However, I do not agree that every single Indian institute is bad for research. We have to seperate the wheat from the chaff. Let's help people identify atleast somewhat decent institutes to research in, like the top NLUs of NLS or NLUD.

2. I agree. However, not everyone has the means, qualifications, intellect and/or finances to go abroad and not everyone can secure a scholarship. Therefore we have to settle with what's available here. So back to my point 1, let's identify atleast few that are decent for a respectable pedigree in India.

3. I disagree. Maybe you are enamored by the tag, but NLS is currently not a great place to be in for a research scholar. Reason being low input and extremely low output. For the last few years, only one candidate out of 50-60 applicants is being selected. I can understand the reason of quality over quantity. But just one !? Moreover ask the current scholars there, their PhD has been halted with no explanation. People who have been working diligently for the last 5 years have their final thesis submission delayed despite receiving a pass from the advisor and the RAC. Low input and low output. Moreover, the research publications are low to nil. You may check the indexes, there is hardly any publication from NLS scholars.

4. If going abroad and NLS are the only choice, then that's a sad state for Indian education since every single professor requires a PhD as qualification for promotion. However I disagree since you forget that other institutions like JNU, IIT, NLUD, NALSAR, Jindal, Ashoka are producing better publications than NLS.

5. I believe the OP is planning to get into academia, maybe that's why they asked this query. So instead of sending everyone abroad or to NLS. Why not suggest better alternatives ? However for people like you who only salivate by seeing a "foreign" degree, you wouldn't bother knowing which Indian institutes are actually doing great work.

---- This is for you OP. I would suggest clearing the JRF if you can and apply at JNU L&G, NLUD, NALSAR, NUJS, GNLU, Jindal, Ashoka, IIT or IIM (the last three for interdisciplinary socio-legal research). That will get you a "tag". In the meantime understand that more than the institute your proposal and publications will determine your future. So work smarter and target universities abroad for postdoc. See which kind of publications and conferences they accept and work towards it for connections. Then apply abroad for postdoc. The difference between PhD and postdoc abroad is that you need an advisor approval, not easy for every Indian, or scholarships. However, for post doctoral opportunities, you get paid to work based on your PhD work and publications which is definitely a doable job during your PhD. So get your PhD tag, publish and aim for postdoc opportunities.

I am not sure what's the process, but try and look for opportunities in centre or state owned PSUs. If you are preparing for judiciary, you will be able to prepare for them on the side as well. If you crack PSUs, initially the work load isn't very bad, so if you still aspire, you can still continue studying for judiciary.

Another alternative is you can consider going for masters at any of the T1s. Along with it, you can continue studying for PSUs, judiciary etc.

Writing two exams a day is not "overwhelming academic pressure" to any serious student, especially when one of the subjects is a backlog studied from before. Many NLUs and other universities used to have two regular exams in a day once upon a time. Stop being a snowflake. Exams shouldn't be studied for in a day, but throughout the semester.

I'm half way done from decent tier 2 law school and I don't have a clue about what I am going to do. I was thinking that I'll clear judiciary and would have a laid back life ahead with decent income and respect but then the judgement came. While being a dropper, only son, and loan on my shoulders, practicing law doesn't seem like the best course of action. My rank is more than half the strength of the batch , so below average. Up until now I've secured decent and good places to intern and got myself published as well. But, for the past few days I've been really stressed about my career, I want to excel at whatever I do, I can't afford to land a t-2 job paying sub 10lpa. Why get outraged? I agree that students likely engaged in slander. Since you clearly feel that NKC was wronged and he did not dirty deals then you will support and inquiry. This question has been relitigated over and over again on Legally India - almost ad nauseam. Therefore, I will say this one last time, very slowly, calmly and quietly, but beg that everyone pay attention to this:

1. The overwhelming majority of law PhD programmes in India are not worth the paper (or website space) their entry requirements are written on.

2. Therefore, the best thing for you to do would be to go abroad with funding - difficult, but not impossible (see LISSDTP, GTA, UCL GCDC, etc).

3. There is one exception to point 1 - just the one exception, unfortunately. That is the PhD at the National Law School of India University.

4. If you can't go abroad and can't go for NLSIU, then PhD's a pipe dream. That's it.

5. Please don't do a PhD unless you want to be an academic.

Hey all, I'm the then-second year who wrote this comment... in the time since, my opinion has changed somewhat. I disagree that placements are assured if you "gel with the right people"; rather, I would say that you should apply yourself, exercise some critical thinking, and just keep yourself in the game - for the record, NUALS has been steadily improving over the years, and it does have a reasonable alumni network and brand value in the fraternity now. I would also like to say that even if you do the bare minimum and graduate from NUALS, you'll be in a pretty good place, so I just want to set the record straight there. I also want to clarify that NUALS is not at all remote from the average NLU perspective, it has a busy train station just 7km away, and a metro feeder bus that stops at the campus gate at least twice a day.

I am a law student at National Law University, Odisha — an institution that, unfortunately, has earned a reputation for administrative high-handedness and bureaucratic arm-twisting. Our examinations begin tomorrow, and yet, we continue to bear the brunt of policies that show little regard for students’ mental or academic well-being.

In 2023, the current Registrar, Mr. Rangin Pallav Tripathi, introduced an unjust academic policy that has made students’ lives exceedingly difficult. Under this policy, those with backlog papers — not necessarily due to failure, but often because of genuine personal or medical reasons — are required to appear for them alongside their regular end-semester examinations.

The result? Students are being forced to write two examinations on the same day — one from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and another from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. When this issue was raised with the Dean, Mrs. Paromita Chattoraj, her response was that students with backlogs are “different” and must bear the consequences of their situation. According to her, it is not the University’s responsibility to accommodate every individual’s needs.

However, this entire problem could have been resolved with a simple administrative adjustment — by making Saturdays working days during the examination period. But to our dismay, this suggestion was rejected by the Controller of Examinations, Mrs. Suman Dash Bhattamishra (who also happens to be the spouse of Mr. Tripathi), citing that the staff cannot be expected to work more than five days a week.

To these authorities, I have only one appeal: try to be compassionate, humane, and understanding toward your own students. We are not cattle. Over the years, we have lost several of our peers to overwhelming academic pressure. Do not let your vague and apathetic policies add more names to that list. It is easy to shed tears when tragedy strikes — but perhaps it is time you realise that your indifference is what pushes students to the edge in the first place.

Basically the title. What I am trying to understand is do interns at these places get to work on stuff that A0 work on? What sort of work is assigned in say a gen corp/m&a call-back/assessment intern? How do teams evaluate students because a lot of the assignments that some interns work on is not even taught in classes, or to phrase it more precisely. How do I know or compare if what I am getting in my internships is what A0s also do? (In the sense it would be better for me since other interns don't get to do those things). How do I know if I am getting work which other interns usually don't? And do T-1s provide for that exposure?

I wanted to check if anyone here has experience with Trilegal’s hiring process and how long it usually takes from interviews to an offer.

I interviewed with the Disputes team at Trilegal — had two rounds with partners (in july and august), both of which went well. I was informed by HR in september that the feedback from the partners was positive and that I was not rejected, but that the hiring was currently on hold because the firm was shifting offices. She said they would get back to me in October. I reached out in first week of october and was again reaffirmed about the positive feedback and was told that they will ask admin when they would want to hire + was asked if i was looking at any other offers (to which i said i am in the process w sam).

I wanted to understand from others who may have gone through the process — how long can Trilegal typically take to release an offer after the final round, especially if there’s an internal pause like this? Would really appreciate any insight into realistic timelines or what next steps might look like.

I had interviews at Trilegal in july then gave the second interview in August (its october now, we are in the thick of the diwali week), I heard from them in September that they have paused hiring because they are shifting offices but they have not rejected me yet and have only received good feedback from the partners but asked me to wait till october. I contacted them in the first week of october and was told that they will have to confirm with admin when they can do the hiring and reaffirmed the fact that i received positive reviews from teh partners and asked me if i have any other offers and i told them that i am in the process with sam. I am extremely interested in trilegal and want to know everyone's thoughts on this - what to expect? And, everyone's experience with tier 1 firms' hiring?

Don't be a sheep, make an independent choice. I think Windows and Android devices are more than good enough for litigation but I can see why people buy into the Apple ecosystem. I think the main perk is being able to airdrop files but actual users of Apple products may disagree. Not worth it in my opinion to splurge so much on Apple products.

Yes, the team do both M&A (including general corporate and PE/VC). The associates are required to generally help both the practice areas. However, once the associates become SA they are generally required to work with one team only. On GS team culture- it's a mix bag- generally, partners are reasonable. There are some mid level associates (SA and MA) who are not that easy to work with. difficult time lines, unreasonable expectations, moody etc. Also, the team functions at an inordinate fast pace, therefore, at times it tend to get very difficult to manage work and life. Won't recommend the team to anyone who is not very passionate about the profession or money. Also, if you are thinking of making a decision to join the team- please be sure that you are fine with working in a pool structure, because pool structure is not everyone's cup of tea- it is very difficult and burns one out.

Studies have shown that tall height in India is a function of genetics and socioeconomic status. Genetics because universally scientists estimate that 80 percent of an individual’s height is determined by the DNA sequence variations they have inherited. In India, certain mutations favouring tall height have passed over from those with Indo-Aryan ancestry. Socioeconomic status because that determines knowledge of good nutrition and access to it — the remaining 20 percent. To some extent, caste is an indicator of both the factors.

This is how any business works. There would be a few people at the executive/managerial positions and a lot more below them. Look at TCS - the number of people they hire vs the number of people sitting at the top.

Law firms offer a much better ratio tbh. Almost everyone who start out at a T1 manage to become a partner in 10-12years if they stick to the law firm life. After that, ofc, the positions are too less so it becomes much more difficult. However, even a salaried partner would earn around a crore per year which is one of the best in India.

It's been really long, I've also been applying to advocates, majorly AORs with good practice as I want to develop practical knowledge first, money was never a consideration I took among the facets of finding my job, although I did try looking for job at law firms (majorly T1); been long since I'm applying to AORs, with objective of getting good knowledge, yet no response. It's really depressing now, yesterday it was diwali and yet all I thought was about my prospect of starting my career.

Tbh, yes I'm very selective towards whom I'm applying to, as I don't wanna shift to Delhi just for the fact of appearing across fora there, but to actually learn.

Idk what I must do now. Need guidance, I want to start my learning, the other option for me is to start it at district court at my home town, but the only problem is that we don't have that many good lawyers across, and honestly the vibe of DC is too insincere. I want to develop the Good ethos of legal practice along with knowledge. I'm ready to work without any remuneration, only consideration is someone who's work profile is considered good amongst the fraternity so that my profile get an anchor for having been trained under the right person.

SKC took the place of SB whose term had ended. SKB was brought in when SKG became Associate P. SKB time in the EC would have ended in March 2026. SKS got a full 5 yr run in the EC and was replaced by the Forensic guy. And AG was brought in by cutting short KS tenure because NKC suspected her to be VP mole.

KS complained to the EC that SKS was given a full 5 yr tenure in the EC because NKC was her doctoral supervisor. NKC responded that he merely followed the precedent set by Talukdar who had given AKP, LDG and AG limited tenures. Both LDG and AG lost their EC positions soon after NKC took over because they had become Associate Ps then. But the real reason was that the trio were considered inconvenient by NKC and he wanted to pack in his acolytes, which he eventually did till things soured up with VP.

Please prove you were born by producing your birth certificate! I'm not sure what you are trying to establish here. If it is that LSAT produces rank lists like CLAT and people go to Yale or Harvard based on their rank, I am sure you can produce proof for that. An "entrance exam" is exactly that. It determines whether you get in. LSAT is a test which carries weight not an entrance exam.

I am from the batch of 2026 coming from a tier 3 private law school. I have previously interned with two tier 1 law firms within the corporate-commercial Departments ranging from typical GC to employment to BnF and TMT.

I got these two internships without any reference after cold mailing a partner who put it through the HR after which i had a grilling interview for internship.

I did very well in my internship with this one tier 1 law firm and even secured a PPO interview and i thought my life was set but unfortunately, i did not clear the interview which surprised the team i worked with too.

After that I have been feeling low but i did not lose faith and applied to pretty much every single tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 law firms but I have got ghosted or an automated rejection mail.

How do I go ahead? What do I do?

I also have a solid foundation with litigation, should i just go back to where it all started even with extremely poor pay?
It all looks so bleak at this point. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I want to learn more about this space, and frankly would love to engage with as many associates as possible. As an engineer who’s recently had a peek at this space, this is my super biased set of observations:

- Ill informed but deep pocketed corporate law firms are shelling out insane amounts for the most basic (and frankly disappointing) RAG implementations. From a technical standpoint at-least, this stuff is youtube tutorial material.

- Being best friends with a random partner at a tier 1 firm >>> good product? Crap products are being used by incredibly talented lawyers, because their partners said so. Is that something to do w the org and incentive structure being different from “traditional” business?

- Actual users don’t seem as happy when you talk to them (the associates/ SAs), but there are some (occasionally over the top) super laudatory testimonials from partners for the very same products. Whats the consensus from y’all as users?

- Why has no Indian Legal AI gone to YC? Or have I missed something here? Is the larger bet in this space on American firms capturing the entire market?

- Big t1 firms have big IT teams, yet whats the output? Have these teams not realised how simple it is to replicate the “models” (there are no bespoke models hence the quotes) they pay AI companies for? What happened to K-AI?

- How do you guys compare a Lucio to a Jurisphere to a Harvey? Do they give you any validation metrics on the performance of their search/deep search stuff? Or is it all going off “it feels good”?

- All these security certifications used as selling points are bullshit, a quick google search will tell they can be and are bought for as little as Rs 399.

- What-sup with all the lawyer founders running AI companies? Like, would you not rather some cracked AI person spearheading the vision and trajectory of things? This certainly seems like a big red flag for prominent Indian deep tech investors who haven’t really approached the space.

hey guys, can someone help me understand how salary works in lateral shifts to tier 1 firms?

So say I join a boutique firm right after graduation for around ₹40k/month (mainly to learn and gain experience) but then later move to a tier 1 where the A0 salary is around 1.2L/month.

If I join as an A1 or move after around 6 months, will they pay me the standard 1.2 (as per the A0/A1 band) or offer a hike on my current ₹40k which would obviously be way lower in comparison?

I'll be starting my practice (not independent, but under someone) in a few months at a HC. Everyone in that HC uses an Ipad (for liquidtext ofc), and since they have an Ipad, they move to the apple ecosystem and go buy a macbook and an iphone.

Currently, I have on old ipad of a relative which I intend to use. My phone is an android one, which can go work for another 2 years. I am thinking of changing laptops (have a dell windows one currently) and am thinking, if i should change the laptop? If yes, should I go for macbook? Would it be compatible with my android phone? Or would a windows laptop be fine? I believe the most usage of my laptop will be for drafting on MS word and research on SCC OnLine.

My current laptop is giving me alot of headache. I really want to change it. But the entire ipad-macbook-iphone set would be expensive, and so i want to be sure if i should take it or just go with windows one.

For context, almost in every chamber i see even the juniors have an iphone, macbook, and an ipad. Hardly does anyone have a windows laptop.

What financial chicanery? Nobody could produce any evidence of anything. All the decisions had the stamp of approval from FC and EC. Students were being foolish and lazy when they thought that without doing any kind of diligence or investigation, they would be able to browbeat an old hand like NKC into resignation. They relied upon hearsay from faculty who had their own agenda and ego battles against the VC. They paid the price too.
