Beyond the appeal of this new opportunity, his departure is heavily driven by significant professional discontent. Even in terms of growth, Jindal has IOE status and a good QS rank. Professorship here will be recognised as regular work ex when applying for VCship positions at NLUs (if the selection panel is fair and unbiased). Both of them probably are eyeing NLU VCships at some point, but they could have easily applied while staying at Jindal.
Thus, I am inclined to believe the view that it was faculty and admin politics that drove them away.
Politicians preferring to be the CMs in their states, rather than being a Union minister.
Bureaucrats (IAS officers) preferring to become Chief Secretaries in the cadre states, rather than becoming a Secretary in a Central Ministry.
Also, remember that NLU, as a Team India analogy, is incorrect because NLUs are state universities. They don't represent India.
However, that's not always the case. Another example would be politicians - many (if not all) would prefer to be CMs in their respective states rather than being a central minister.
