Only 8 out of 80 TMC MLAs and 6 out of 42 TMC MPs attended Mamata’s dharna yesterday. MG was among those 6 MPs. The fact that she flew down from Delhi to be beside Mamata shows she is being steadfastly loyal and is not a turncoat.

But today’s news is that the party itself may effectively cease to exist, because 58 out of 80 MLAs have formed a breakaway TMC faction. Some influential Muslim leaders are among them. In that case, the original TMC is heading towards a certain death.

So what will MG do now? Continue to be on board a sinking ship till her RS term ends in 2032? Join the breakaway faction? Or join the Congress or some other party?

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. No one should criticise her for defending her client, for there is the cab rank rule, and she is an excellent lawyer, and would have been so even if were not from NLS or a Queer.

However, to choose to be a member of a party or to stand in RS elections from the party she did has to be one of the most stupid things one can do. One should just not stand for elections rather than get a ticket from a party like TMC. Very sad she did this. TMC for all purposes is finished in Bengal. MB still has an aura and a fan base but that will do nothing. People who voluntarily supported the party should seriously instrospect.

I strongly disagree with you when you say that Mamta has/had an aura. She came into power only because of anti-incumbency against the Left. She consolidated her position not through good governance and by endearing herself to the people, but through rampant criminalisation. The moment the SIR and central security forces permitted a free and fair election, she got routed.

The problem with people in Delhi is that they have no idea of the reality in Bengal. They believe the nonsense that Rajdeep Sardesai, Ravish Kumar and other Delhi journalists say about Mamata being some sort of Mother Teresa. MG too fell for this propaganda.

That way, someone like Sanjoy Ghose (who is more aware of the state) was smart enough not to join the TMC. He can now plausibly say that he always a Congress supporter rather than TMC, then join the Congress without any criticism or stain on his record.

I wrote that comment. I am from Bengal. I have also spent alot of time there. I agree and see why you say MB does not have any aura today. But i tell you, as someone who has seen the earlier regime, MB, and the new BJP one, she always, despite whatever her regime did (sandeshkhali, narada, rg kar, etc etc) had commanded some respect, and been and perhaps is still respected by many. Has to do alot with her simplicity. See why people hate AB but not MB despite MB approving of everything AB did.

She is a very smart lady who reads opportunities even before they come up. See how she and ms katju have built their career over social media, awards, paid Wikipedia pages etc. List of cases is smaller. She wil do very well because she can switch sides whenever opportunity arises. Ref Rss case, rg kar case.

NEWS FLASH: Only 8 out of 80 MLAs and 6 out of 41 MPs attended a meeting called by Mamata Banerjee at her house today. MG was NOT among them. Neither were Mahua Moitra and Sagarika Ghose. Fuels speculation that they may be meeting Rahul Gandhi and headed to the Congress (rather than the breakaway faction). In MG’s case, she has the least incentive to stay with the TMC. She is a complete stranger to Bengal and doesn’t speak the language. Her only link is representing the state of WB and some TMC politicians. All the state briefs are now gone and only the TMC briefs remain. Will a handful of TMC briefs be enough?

So media is reporting that Mamata will merge her faction of the TMC with the Congress and become Congress National Vice President, while Abhishek becomes National General Secretary. This means MG will automatically become a Congress RS MP now!! Fantastic outcome for her. Joins a national party, gets access to Rahul and gets a chance to represent Cong governments in TN, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala.

MG must be secretly celebrating that the BJP won. 😅
