Manifesting that job in 2030, when I know I am a better lawyers and can contribute better to my organisation than I am doing currently.
+1
Some years into the profession now, and Iโve had my fair share of toxic bosses. But my first one? Truly a โฎโฎโฎ.
Background:
She was a Senior Associate then. Competent at her work. As a mentor though, she was terrible. Work would be dumped on me with zero context, zero guidance. When I tried to figure things out on my own, Iโd be met with absolute hellfire.
Her logic was simple: โMy seniors never helped me. I figured it out on my own. You should too.โ
Fair enough, mistakes happened, I owned them. The berating was understandable because it was understandable.
What was worse was the silent treatment that followed. Days of being ignored, no communication, no feedback, until suddenly everything was โnormalโ again. And then the cycle would repeat.Eventually, I moved to another firm with better mentors and a healthier environment.
Now:
Iโm now in-house as a Senior Legal Counsel. Sheโs a Partner at another firm. And her firm is one of our regular external counsels forming a major part of her book.
The moment she realised Iโd be her point of contact, I got a text: the usual polite small talk, followed by โhope whatever happened in the past is in the past and wonโt affect our work.โ
No, maโam.
Itโs very much my time to rain hellfire and make you miserable, of course before I take my business elsewhere.
