The EC finally cut the extension elastic of NKC. Nandimath is going to be the new VC. NKC wanted to brazen it out and put a laundry list of things to discuss but all those things deferred since the new VC takes over shortly. Interestingly, four faculty members appointed by NKC also resigned. Apparently, this was in response to a complaint by a former EC faculty member who rightly argued that NKC was being capricious. Expect a new game and changed dynamics in the EC.

Apparently the following were in the race, AKP, Sullu, Rathin B (NBU Law), ID (NLU Meg), Vij (MNLU Nag) among others.

But what about the financial chicanery, shady faculty recruitments etc? PIB inquiries got waylaid by NKC earlier and now this too gets hushed up in exchange for shoving out NKC? And what about his acolytes including the Four Horsemen who will now buzz around Nandi?

So who is the new VC? I was told that the candidates had been interviewed last week and a shortlist of three names had been sent to the CJI to pick from. An EC meeting had also been held couple of days back. Did the name get announced there? How long before the next guy joins? What happened to all the allegations and protests against the current guy?

Started courses without transparent analyses of costs and future prospects of the students currently in MSc Forensics, the new LLB etc.

For all the awards, NAAC etc al, NKC will be best remembered for SH and campus protests. SJA still has time to initiate inquiries against him and his acolytes. That way OVN also gets a signal to behave.

I feel sorry for NUJS. Once had the most respected and scholarly people in the country as VCs (Madhava Menon, BS Chimni, MP Singh). In those days, it was deemed as a strong rival to NLSIU and was considered better than NALSAR. After that, it's been a continuous slide downhill and the absolute dregs of the world have been running the institute. The decline of the Governing Body is also pathetic: once A-list Supreme Court counsels were on the lost, now it's just an extension of the Trinamool Congress party office.

OVN is better than the current guy in one way: he can speak decently, without embarrassing the institute. But beyond that I don't see much improvement.

My prediction: OVN as VC will rehabilitate all the TLC NLSIU profs who have been forced to move out: Elizabeth, Ramakrishna etc etc. NUJS will be their post-retirement space. Politically, he will kowtow to whoever is in power. Right now, he will be with the TMC. If the BJP wins the 2026 assembly elections, he will side with them.

But how did OVN survive all these years under SKY? Also if he really did exceed his brief in trying to scuttle SKY appointment and also signed off on all the alleged financial chicanery by VR (surely there too just like NKC he took had EC/FC "approval") then why couldn't the SBA at least het an inquiry initiated? OVN gave an interview to TOI Kolkata. Very clearly states that it's make or break for NUJS. And certain admin transfers indicate that he has hit the ground running. Clearly he is coming in well informed and knows that his shadowy supporters will not abandon him in the near term.

Also the transfers effected today drew substantial but quiet cheer from faculty, admin and student communities. Whether the rinse will actually clean up the Root and Stem is yet to be seen. Hopefully it wasn't an eyewash.

SKC, SKB, AG and someone from Forensic Sc resigned from EC following a complaint by KS that NKC had been capricious in making these appointments. But SKB had been appointed earlier. Why complain only now? SKB consistently batted for NKC and that too when KS was in the EC along with SB.

By the time AG, SKC and Forensic fellow were brought into the EC, NKC was already on his way out, technically. Don't understand what happened.

OVN got the HAL Chair when VR was the VC. It was basically a chunk of money to train HAL folks in contract management. Don't know what it did later. After Sudhir came in many VR loyalists got shunted or scooted elsewhere. Some immediately and others whenever transfers got arranged.

OVN was later placed on the Ness Wadia Chair something that even NLS had forgotten about. Maybe some initial batches knew abt it because it had an endowment kitty of less than 30 lacs and that came in when either NRM or NLM were heading the law school.

Keep hearing whispers about VK. But no one from NLU Assam or MNLU-N are willing to share actual evidence of wrongdoing. He was quite a character at NALSAR and his name did come up in an inquiry report (Kian had reported on it). But Tau took care of it and VK never went back to NALSAR. I have a reason to ask. I was interviewed for an Asst. Prof. post and I met one of my old friends (who's now at NUJS) when I visited for physical interview. They said "why did you waste money to come here, the post was already promised under the table for one of NKC's stooges, who's been around here for a while doing everything to please NKC". My 7-Panel interview went extremely well, yet the person who my friend named, was selected. Also informal yet very trust-worthy another friend's source, that I was ranked next to this selected person in the merit list.

If the resigned is one among those you named, I can think of writing an email to consider me for the position! It'll be helpful! Whether my request is considered or not. Whether my email makes sense or not, I worked hard for this post, and I believe I deserve a chance at this!

The 4 resigned from the EC, not from their jobs. And yes every recruitment at least since the days of PIB have had such deals. The 2017 recruitment was a scam but NKC killed the inquiry. One of the complainants passed away another got recruited elsewhere. So the matter got abandoned.

Your best chance is to first acquire the requisite paperwork which shows the wrongdoing, if any. NKC is good with paperwork and likely that he scored his candidate better on subjective side.

If you do get the paperwork (because NUJS often misplaces inconvenient stuff) then lodge a formal complaints separately with the UGC; the Chancellor (CJI), the Law Dept of WB and its Minister. Send copies to VC and Registrar of NUJS. Use a proper courier so that you get the tracking evidence rt. Also email.

At NUJS, inconvenient things are often not brought before the EC and the EC also tacitly allows the VC to paper over such wrinkles.

Rt now and inquiry has been directed concerning the recruitment of a forensic science faculty member. Papers are being actively removed and shredded.

If you had really been a candidate for the position of an Assistant Professor of law at a national law university, then you should know better. Even if a person resigns from a post at a public university after having joined it, then the authorities cannot simply consider another candidate like this. They would have to re-advertise for the post and hold the interview once again. As for the rumours, nobody has resigned from their job yet.

SKC took the place of SB whose term had ended. SKB was brought in when SKG became Associate P. SKB time in the EC would have ended in March 2026. SKS got a full 5 yr run in the EC and was replaced by the Forensic guy. And AG was brought in by cutting short KS tenure because NKC suspected her to be VP mole.

KS complained to the EC that SKS was given a full 5 yr tenure in the EC because NKC was her doctoral supervisor. NKC responded that he merely followed the precedent set by Talukdar who had given AKP, LDG and AG limited tenures. Both LDG and AG lost their EC positions soon after NKC took over because they had become Associate Ps then. But the real reason was that the trio were considered inconvenient by NKC and he wanted to pack in his acolytes, which he eventually did till things soured up with VP.

What financial chicanery? Nobody could produce any evidence of anything. All the decisions had the stamp of approval from FC and EC. Students were being foolish and lazy when they thought that without doing any kind of diligence or investigation, they would be able to browbeat an old hand like NKC into resignation. They relied upon hearsay from faculty who had their own agenda and ego battles against the VC. They paid the price too.

Why get outraged? I agree that students likely engaged in slander. Since you clearly feel that NKC was wronged and he did not dirty deals then you will support and inquiry. Surely you are correct, and therefore the inquiry will likely conclude that students played mischief and maybe the faculty who instigated them will also be unmasked. And most definitely these students , especially those in the SJA must be severely disciplined for doing all this.

So, let's have an inquiry on the allegations against NKC and till then his dues, terminal benefits etc should be held up. Also this inquiry must be completed within a certain amount of time. Do you have any suggestions on who should conduct the inquiry?

Let's start with biometric attendance for both, faculty and students. And no relaxation from the BCI mandated attendance percentage. As for 'useless research papers', surely you have got excellent papers of your own that are widely cited and acknowledged by the experts, for you to judge the quality of others' work. There are many academics and teachers who work round the clock and keep themselves available for students. This is not a 10-5 job. As for automatic promotion, there's no such thing. There are scores that need to be obtained every academic year and interviews which are held for all UGC-prescribed promotions. NKC got a farewell from a select group of faculty and admin staff. Some even cried. Quite a few were the acolytes who were present with NKC when he was gheraoed by students earlier. But certain well known ▮▮▮ also turned up as well.

Apparently an recently resigned EC member upset for being eased out along with his Guru insisted that truancy among certain faculty has been on for a long time but ever since the Professorial promotions got done, it has gone out of control.

EC agreed to bring in new rules concerning faculty discipline. It is in this that the old PIB proposal on biometric attendance got dovetailed with BCI directive on attendance

Last time the teachers were very concerned about the biometric attendance thing. Not all though. Some saw more profit in WEBEL securing the contract because just with PWD no one scrutinizes the downstream contracting.

So the teachers upset with biometric scrutiny, riled up the students on other issues as well as how attendance tightening could have negative implications for students too.

While the students rightly went after PIB for dodgy CCTV deals etc, the biometric thing got waylaid. Teachers got their work done and students realised much later that shots were fired from their shoulders.

Same thing this time as well although I fully support the eviction of NKC. But the root and stem survive. Wonder what students will do about that.

The shortlist included Prof Rattan Singh, a former Prof of UILS, Punjab Univ and presently VC of the State Open Univ; and a PIB pal V Sudhish, a senior advocate and legal academic holding adjunct positions at various law colleges. PIB had appointment him a Chair Prof.

You will not accept that other than NLSIU because of its reputation, legacy and current active admin, no other NLU is doing well at this point. As for top three status, if you're relying upon NIRF, then take the shady perception score away and NUJS will easily be within top 3. It already outscored the other three in several parameters in the last NIRF. So your 'legitimate criticism' is often without any objectivity. NLUD is a shadow of its past self and NALSAR really isn't doing any better. NUJS gets the bad press owing to internal squabbles and trolls, that's all.

A core lust is ready. Irrespective of who wins. Saffron will not win. At best it may better the numbers by a slight percentage. But some of them may switch like last time.

Saffron in Bengal lacks grassroot reach, organisation and tenacity. Most importantly Nagpur daddy doesn't want it to win yet and has far more faith on its green protege.

I agree with the broad assessment that the BJP is unlikely to win. The reason is simple and has been discussed in the media several times. The TMC gets almost 100% of the Muslim vote and between 10 to 25% of the Hindu vote. Plus ▮▮▮ and voter intimidation. This formula ensures an easy win for them. The BJP wins seats only in places where the Muslim population is tiny, which are not that many.

So we need to give up the delusion of NUJS falling under a BJP regime. OVN will bow to the TMC, just like Bhat, Talukdar and NKC did. Even if the 1% chance of the BJP winning comes true, you will see the corrupt TMC elements at NUJS switch over to the BJP. So NUJS will be stuck with the same people.

The Bengal elections will be critical. Even if Mamata wins, we don't know if Moloy Ghatak will remain as law minister. He is getting old and is also being investigated by the Modi govt in the coal scam. He can be removed and replaced by someone else even if he wins his seat.

Expect a big reshuffle in the NUJS governing bodies anytime between May and September next year -- regardless of whether the TMC wins or not.

The EC will need to bring in the four faculty folks. Cannot keep it hanging till May 2026.

Unfortunately admin staff do not have representation in any of the governing bodies. Nor do students.
