Hey, 2nd year law student here. I feel awful about two friends I thought were really close to me, lying to me about an internship and doing it together and elsewhere in a firm in Bangalore. I’m happy for them but it just hurts. Is it how it’s going to be for the next 3 and half years? Ig hurts and it’s so lonely. You can’t even seem to tell who your real friends are. Is law school THAT competitive? I need suggestions and possibly motivation.

Take my two cents of advice. Law schools are the shittiest place to make friends—peak toxicity. Not saying everyone is like that, but yeah, while making friends, always take their sugar-coated words with a pinch of salt. This is not just for law school, but in life in general.
The real friend(s) will be the ones who will criticise you and try to correct your ways - not in public but in a personal space. They will be the ones who will be brutally honest with you. They will be happy with your success, but also ready to correct your ways if possible. Secondly, never have too many expectations of your friends. This EXPECTATION destroys a lot of friendships and relationships. Always have the bare minimum expectations, and you will see the world to be a better place to live. Third - this is my personal take - always make friends with whom your career goals don't align. This will save you from future heartbreaks and jealousy. You guys won't be competing with each other. That should be your end goal.

At last, enjoy life a bit. heartbreaks, betrayal, and jealousy are part of life. They teach you whom to trust and whom to love and from whom you should always maintain a safe distance. Learn from the mistakes. Don't frown upon them.

Thank you so much. This really helped a lot. Could you also please advise me on this last thing? Friendship dynamics changed a lot in 2nd year. I am still friends with my roommate and hang out with her mostly but I was disappointed not surprised when she lied about a message wherein our syllabus was shared in the group for French exam. Not only did she keep mum about the groups existence she also lied that no such message was sent about the syllabus when it was(as another good friend of mine sent it).

I don’t want to cut her off but please suggest how do I keep myself detached from lying butches like her

Not OP but you should analyse the pattern of your friends behaviour when things like internship, exams, assignments etc come and how she reacts.

If she has a habit of lying and being diplomatic when she has to take a stand you should probably evaluate your decision to be friends with her.

People who are sweet in front of your face and talk behind your back are the most pathetic humans because they don't have a spine of their own.

I really regret that I did not know about these things during my period at law school. Would have helped me to be clear about my career choices and expectations in life.

Law as a profession attracts toxicity from the day you start preparing for law entrance exams imho.
