A first year student at NLU Delhi passed away yesterday due to suicide. This marks the third such incident at the university in three months. It is hard to believe that this is a mere coincidence and reflects shamefully upon the university's atmosphere. Immense shame upon the university administration and their apathy for creating such an environment.

God! What is happening at that place? It still has got decent faculty who care for the students. Why aren't they doing something to at least talk to the students, provide mentorship, getting a campus counselor, trying to understand the issues that these kids are facing? All this is such a terrible waste of life and potential. I was reading another LI thread where multiple commentators claimed that empathy has got no place in the modern university. Are they really immune to these tragedies?

The number of Gen Z student deaths in a span of 5-10 years is much more than the number of Gen X and Gen Y student deaths combined in a span of 20-25 years. We are in the middle of a very serious mental health crisis. The causes for it are:

- Social media

- Increased competition for jobs and growing population

- Culture of shaming, ridiculing boycotting and cancelling people. It's traumatic when a teenager is shunned and ostracised by his peers because he is socially awkward, or because he said something politically incorrect.

This problem is not unique to law schools. It’s a universal problem all over the world. Answer is to have compulsory counselling and follow Australia by banning Instagram for minors, so that Gen Alpha is at least saved. The problem with Instagram is twofold. One is that you feel inadequate and depressed by watching the “perfect” lives of others on reels and photos (in truth, it’s all faked and using filters). The other problem is that if you try to post anything a bit edgy, you get trolled and insulted.

Compulsory counselling? Do you even know what you are talking about, or what the term 'counselling' means? Or what the implications of a policy making engaging with such a process mandatory are? Please educate yourself before randomly making suggestions.

Advocate all you like for universities to have more qualified, empathetic, counselling staff - that I 1000000000% support, but please don't advocate for mandatory engagement with counselling. There are people for whom engagement with what is purported to be a process of counselling has caused great difficulties and done more harm than good.

The recent news of suicide in different universities and offices all over the country shows more about the immense amount of stress the country as a whole has put on competition and excellence. 100 out of 100 in cbse is where it starts.

Then litigation is stressful and Law firms create unnecessary pressure on young students to perform like robots and they themselves lack any work-life balance.

I really dont think it is the university atmosphere alone. It is WE as a legal fraternity that is responsible.

It is important for all of us to create safe spaces within our student groups and interact with faculty who are approachable and willing.

Law in itself is a serious study and one normal case can have different impact on different people.

Another observation is that Emotional intelligence and Academic intelligence both need an emphasis now.

Bar Council of India and UGC should

1. Make attendance flexible.

2. Not impose terrible credit requirements and hours of teaching making universities struggle to keep up the number of hours and subjects.

3. Soon faculty members will also fall to stress. Cuttack incident is a call that faculty needs support too.

I am already thinking of the plight of faculty at NLU delhi who would be consoling students while themselves struggling to cope up with loss. Noone i say noone wants to harm and see their children, students or friends take this step.

Job, marks and competiton seems to be making people forget that we work to live and not live to work. Please take care of each other and I for one feel that harsh comments on nlud would now again put pressure on students who would feel more stressed as to the image of the place they have joined.

NluD and other law school students bashing each other on this forum itself shows we all as a community are only trying to win arguments than making all law schools a better community as a whole. Please take this as a wake up call.

Administration alone can do nothing. Students, teachers and parents have to together try to build a healthy future.

Not just the college administration, but even the student body there is equally to blame for creating the most toxic and cliquey environment on campus- things like selective activism and cancelling only as long as it doesn’t involve their own friends (in which case the narrative is instantly reversed), and an absolute lack of academic as well as non-academic/social support for anyone who needs it.

Leadership is about listening to your people. If someone vying for a leadership position is only interested in their own ideas, I think it’s safe to say they’re not ready to take charge. So much about being a good leader, I think, involves humility: Do you actively listen to your team? Do you actually let them talk instead of interrupting them? Do you take their ideas and feedback seriously? Do you hire people who are good at what they do and then trust them to do the job (ideally, better than you could)? There is no place for ego at the top—it’s lonely enough up there already.

Early in my career at the Brooklyn DA’s office, I heard from the head of homicide, a figure I deeply admired. This was my dream job, the type of case I aspired to prosecute. However, as I listened to this individual speak, I realized they were a “know-it-all.” They exuded an air of absolute authority, convinced they knew everything about everything.

At that moment, I understood this wasn’t true expertise but a facade. No one knows everything. This type of inflated ego, believing in one’s infallibility, doesn’t belong in leadership. It stifles growth, prevents collaboration, and ultimately hinders the leader’s and team’s success.

A “know-it-all” leader, blinded by their perceived omniscience, fails to recognize their limitations. This lack of self-awareness is detrimental to both the leader and their team. A leader who believes they possess all the answers stifles growth and innovation. They are unwilling to seek input from others, missing out on valuable perspectives and expertise.

Effective leadership requires a willingness to learn and adapt. A humble leader understands that they don’t have all the answers and surrounds themselves with a capable team. They foster an environment where diverse viewpoints are welcomed and collaboration is encouraged. This approach allows the team to leverage each member’s strengths, leading to greater success than any individual could achieve alone.

By recognizing and embracing their own limitations, leaders open the door to personal and collective growth. They create a culture of learning where everyone feels empowered to contribute their unique skills and knowledge.

See, let me speak frankly - this is not the time to speculate or spread rumours. People are not well here on campus (NLUD) because of 4 student deaths in the last four months (1 accident and 3 suicides). Everyone is shaken. People who would never even think about taking such a step are now having these thoughts over and over again (because they have heard so many repeated instances in such a short span of time).

There have been no protests against the administration even after 3 students have committed suicide in last 3 months. Students are just not well to even do that. Everyone is devastated.

While the administration had created an environment that forced the first two students to commit suicide (because of academic reasons i.e. detention or year repeat) the third (most recent) incident is entirely because of the student's personal reasons back his home. He joined just 2 months back and wasn't suffering academically. It was because of purely personal family reasons and therefore I would request you all to please stop spreading rumours about the latest incident.

As far as the first suicide is concerned, most of you have not heard anything about it because the university, despite student demand, never acknowledged the incident. He committed suicide because the university was forcing him to repeat the year twice or thrice.

The second suicide happened because of the same reason. She was detained and forced to repeat the year.

And just to tell you all, around 10 more people were asked to repeat the year who were all considering taking harsh steps. We begged the vice chancellor to use his extraordinary powers and hold special repeat examinations so that these students are not forced to repeat a year. But the VC did not agree. We told him that they are suicidal and consequences would be harsh but still the VC did not paid any attention.

It took the two suicides for the admin to take the issue seriously and bring a no-detention policy in the university by which all students can clear their backlogs before they are awarded their degree & thus no one would be detained in a year.

The latest suicide is not because of any failure of administration but the first and second ones most definitely are because of the inactions of the administration.

The student culture is also at fault because everyone is so busy in themselves, their internships, their moots, their publications, that nobody pays attention to the ones who are not able to cope with such challenges. Had we been more proactive in helping students who suffer academically and not just our elite friend circles, the first two suicides could have been prevented, which could have in turn prevent the third suicide.

I am disappointed and heartbroken looking at the student dynamics here. People have their own eco chambers and only a handful of people somehow occupy the self-righteous positions of narrative/agenda setting in the college. These folks work in the comfort of their elite woke friend circles and make all others isolated and ostracized. Difference of opinion is one thing that they ostracize people on. Further, nobody gives two f*cks about people from marginalized tier 2, tier 3 city students who may not have had equal access to such activities that have been portrayed as cool in the university.

Sorry, while the university should definitely listen to the students' problems, provide counseling, talk to the parents etc., making people pass when they are clearly not up to the standard by holding multiple examinations every year is simply not the solution. I'm entitled to get marks because otherwise I'll harm myself is a very dark and undesirable way of putting things across. If someone is failing, then they need help to do better, not simply an undeserved promotion.

You are not getting the point.

Every underserved promotion is better than a life lost. This is not about passing a student who has failed the exam, it's about providing another opportunity to pass. It already reflects in the final marksheet, no-one is trying to hide anything or getting undue advantage.

Not every person is as strong as you. That you are not recognising the same, is not cool.

The point is actually that the university (along with parents, etc) should invest in counselling students that one failure is not the end of life. If students can't deal with failing a subject in college, how will they manage the actual challenges that life throws at them?

Failing an exam / backlog in a subject / losing a year in college are all in the long term trivial things. Others have commented on this thread how they went through all of these and still ended up fine in life. That is the message that students should be given.

Unfortunately they feel excessively pressured by these things which they shouldn't be. That's the role of the university and parents - to provide support and messaging accordingly.

The question is not about specific undeserved promotion. What you're suggesting is that the evaluation system loses its sanctity altogether. If one can appear for examinations over and over again in the same year, then over a period of time, students will stop taking examinations seriously at all. There is already a repeat examination system in place. Going by your logic, why stop at a single special repeat examination? We should keep making the student appear for exams until they secure pass marks. Eventually the faculty are just going to set easy papers and make the person pass regardless of whether they really clear it or not, or else set sub standard papers just to deal with the additional workload. If the reason why someone has failed the first two times is that they haven't learnt enough, then they should go back to the learning board, not simply carry on trying to 'hack the exam'. I don't like exams at all, I would rather have continuous evaluation throughout the sem, but the educational system needs to be radically transformed to implement it effectively. The solution of mental health problems is counseling and understanding, not a pass certificate.

This is a very cynical and disrespectful way to instrumentalize a classmate's tragic death. Law schools should work on creating a supportive environment but the way to do that is not compromising academic standards or their faculty's mental health with unscheduled exams. Who do you think sets questions and grades them? Gremlins? What about the support staff who have to print papers, open rooms and do all the admin work for extra exams? Are they elite? Do you think they get paid extra for the extra work?

You are right about the need for more support for marginalized students but this will go much further if you understand that law schools have small budgets and are run by human beings who are usually less elite than most of the students. Ask for things that can be given. Pitch in and say how you will help change the culture. It is not all admin created, students add to the toxicity and can add to the change.

Detentions and year losses are not the fault of the administration but of students. Study, don't fail, attend classes - buckle up. If medically or mentally unwell, prove your infirmity and avail the standard concessions available to everyone.

Rules cannot be set aside just because someone is a threat to themselves or others. In fact, in such a case, the person should be removed from the institution and treated.

The world cannot stops for one or two people. The rules cannot be bent for individual cases. Study, or face the consequences.

Furthermore, your mental issues are not the community's fault. No one is responsible for yourself except you. Get whatever help you want, but no one is guilty for being absorbed in their own concerns of moots and publications.

The universities are situated within societies that bring with them all the issues affecting communities and their residents. The NCRB report states that there are 26 cases of student suicides every day, which means one student takes their life every hour. This is tragic. It's disheartening to hear that a first-year student, who had barely spent a month at the university, felt compelled to take such drastic action. This situation speaks volumes about families and parenting in general and is part of a larger problem. In law schools, academics are smooth, with hardly anyone failing. On the other hand, failure rates are higher in traditional colleges, where such instances are rarely seen. The students in TLC have better resilience and coping mechanisms.

I have in my life never ever seen a college as worse as this UNIV, I wish I had never been a part of this campus. Students, so mean that they talk of extra online classes just because of their Internships even after so much of suicide. The way this useless SBA functions hiding so much of Information and asking Students and Alumni to be "sensitive" while publishing in Media just because they believe they are negotiating with the administration. Yes brother you study in the best place ever. Is it NLUD or some HARVARD? Read the email sent by Cultural Committee particularly the second line accepting lack of personal interaction within the university campus. All losses are tragic. The media portrayed a false picture. In two of the cases, the incidents occurred at their respective places under their parents' care, so only one case occurred on the campus. The student body and administration have jointly worked to mitigate the implications. NLUD is a resilient community with the best of everything, and I, as an alumnus, am sure it will respond to all situations effectively.

The issue is that the question pertains to a larger problem, as NRCB data shows that the toll is 27 cases per day. Most often, such cases do not have anything to do with academic pressures. What I gather from many is that NLUD has perhaps the most relaxed system of academics. There is no detention policy, a lesser number of classes, and the best teacher-student ratio (1 to 10). Even all other law schools only implement the BCI syllabus and nothing much beyond that. So, there is a need to have a deeper understanding of these issues.

You from Admin? Any idea when did University introduce no detention policy? Do these professors even meet you after college hours? Don't you go to college at 9 and leave at 4:30 or are you an AILET aspirant judging the University from some YouTube videos. Even if Academic pressure will have less to do. No body can deny how isolated or hollow the place feels. No human emotion or touch by any means.

It is essential that 5 year integrated law introduces an exit option with a graduate degree minus the law degree such as BA or BCOM or whatever might be the base study of the selected 5 year course. This will ensure that students who feel out of place in the law program are not forced to be stuck to it for 5 years which is a long time and they will not exit inspite of feeling out of place with the thought of wasting their 2 or 3 years without any degree in hand. It is extremely important that concerned authorities of 5 year integrated program look into this asap.

Everyone here is trying to throw in some random reasons as to why the departed souls took such an extreme stance is just terrifying. Are you guys in some way related to them( family or friends)? Were you guys present during the last moment or even throughout the whole process where they decided to take the extreme step? I am sure answer to every question would be a NO! Only. So for god's sake, stop speculating and giving your final desicion for the same. Let the authorities vested with the responsibility of deciding these factors take care of it. If they find college admin or anyone directly or indirectly responsible they will take some action for sure.
