What is the difference between an Associate and a Consultant at tier 1 law firms?

Both of them seem to be performing similar tasks so why is there a difference in their designations?
Associate are not on full time employment they are om retainership basis agreement. Retainership is extended from time to time
Consultants travel a lot compared to associates, they also make more money than associates.
Bhai, he means legal consultants in firms. Not Big 4/MBB consultants.
