I am from a tier-1 law college at rajasthan and I absolutely hate the fact that I keep getting ridiculed as a nri candidate out there. Those who survive, survive in a very low-key fashion. If you are NRI - automatically people expect you to top the semester exams (because of your wealth) and when you don’t, you will be sniffed off. There will be ostracisation to the extent that people will change their tone while they talk to the NRI candidate. If you are not incredible famous/classic bootlicker of your batchmates, you will face problems of all sorts. I don’t know if this is the case for nujs or gnlu as well, but I will recommend people to avoid this seat at all costs cause mental peace matters. Rhetorics and insults which may seem ‘small’ to them, can appear meaninglessly harmful to you. You don’t want that. This is an anonymous forum- and I hope I haven’t been trollish as such, I just really wanted to put this heartfelt post out there. If there’s similar candidates like me, do ensure and we can talk about it without being trollish. I will also like the mod to highlight this thread for transparency.

lol boss you have no idea. It’s not ‘wealth’ per se…so I won’t agree with the OP here. It’s basically the fact that we are buying our way in after spending 50L for a legal education where candidates are spending half the penny. It somehow reeks of ‘privilege’. Wonder how I am figuring all these out? Cause I was in the exact same position few years back.

Weird, because at NUJS I found NRI candidates looking down on SC candidates who had lower CLAT scores. Then SC candidates looking down on ST candidates who had even lower scores! And merit listers looking down on all others because they had the highest scores, but merit listers from big cities looking down on merit listers from small cities! Then, there was a caste system of schools, with certain elite ICSE schools at the top. Someone from a reserved category could "upgrade" his/her position in the hierarchy if he/she was an alum of such an elite school.

Bottomline: NLUs are hyper competitive, hierarchical places where people try to denigrate others and get jealous of others. You just focus on your studies and shut out everything else. Get a good GPA and join a firm. That's it. Screw everything else.

Fellow ‘NLUJ NRI Survivor’ here too lmao. If this makes sense, idc if it doesn’t. I won’t mention my exact year of studying but I am pretty sure that you are referring to NLUJ only. We do have a problem. A glaring issue in fact. The current batches have this animosity against nri candidates where they can be made a punching bag for jokes. I know some people who are afraid to elaborate themselves as ‘NRI’ in my batch because of the stereotypical thought. Oh also, I know certain candidates at Nluj who even topped certain subjects around the college but still helmed as ‘undeserving’ due to sheer jealousy ofc. NLUJ is becoming the silent hub of nri discrimination. I have seen students checking a specific year’s nri merit list to gauge candidates and their names in our register. Lmfao. The situation’s detoriating and I know some people will denote us as ‘snowflakes’ but it is what it is. I have even heard this pathetic rhetoric of ‘nri candidates should retake clat for their lack of qualification’, I am glad I didn’t fall into that trap of backbitching. I did retake clat tho, didn’t work out. Plus the current lot was quite happy when the college was supposed to scrap off the ‘nri’ quota. Smhhh

For noobs: here's the unofficial caste system in NLUs. This caste system affects your friends circle and dating life. This is the ugly truth which NLU-ites will hate to admit.

I have listed 8 broad castes, but within each castes there are sub-castes based on region, school etc. A whole hierarchy exists within these sub-castes as well. For example, ranks can be an issue. People literally introduce themselves as "Hi, I'm Aarav, CLAT merit list rank 5". It means I am superior to merit list rank 20. Even skin colour and genetics can be an issue. A Muslim batch mate of mine used to claim that his ancestors are from Iran, so he is superior to other Muslims with dark skin. Another batchmate told me he is a "Brahmin Christian" (whatever the F that means: it's apparently a thing in Kerala). Similarly, you have the Iyer-Iyengar rivalry.

People say you need to go to an Indian village to experience class and caste. Not really. Your average NLU is just as bad -- probably even worse.

4. NRI candidates from elite backgrounds

5. SC/ST/OBC candidates from elite backgrounds (e.g. child of an IAS officer from SC/ST quota)

7. NRI candidates from non-elite backgrounds (this can happen, e.g. a child whose family is rich but not well-educated, such as rich farmers, and this reflects in the child's socialisation and acculturation --- I have seen such cases)

8. SC/ST/OBC candidates from non-elite backgrounds

NRI quota might seem unfair to some, but, illegal, seriously? How is it illegal? Do you mean to say the NLUs who have an NRI quota are breaking the law? Are you a Law student? Do you understand what illegal means?

Yes, NRI kids with lower ranks than the General Merit students get into NLUs by paying high fees. if you think this affects the overall quality of the institute, what about the other quotas?

Very honestly speaking many people have a pre-conceived notion that these NRI people are arrogant, narcissists, egoistic and judgmental. So, the others do oppose or not talk to them and will try to isolate and exclude them. This causes a reverse discrimination system where the downtrodden badmouths the elites. But there were many honest and great NRIs that people said existed in such law schools. I don't know if it's due to this stereotyping and yes keyboard warriors are everywhere now-a-days.
