1. NUJS has a terrible and strictly-compliant 6-month Ph.D. duration where you're required to visit at least 5 times during this period. The submissions and the test also seem rigorous. There was even a cancellation of schedule that hecked us all. I should have spent at least over 1.2 lakhs on travel, accommodation, food and cancellation of my flights due to their mismanagement. They waste time during your coursework and keep online classes and expect you to sit offline to attend it (Facepalm).
2. NUJS, despite all bad and ugly, shines in its good part. Quality of Faculty in the field and availability of resources at disposal (incl. remote web access). The people you may get as your supervisor, you can 100% rely on their scholarship in the field. Mine is also in the same field and my supervisor is extremely good. I hear the same from people of same theme of law but with different supervisors. They know what they are doing.
3. Fees is 65k per annum (although IDK if they dutifully collect every year unlike NALSAR). Library access fee is 10k for 6 years and is refundable at the end of your completion. Free Grammarly that costs 11k/year. Extremely good online catalogue and supremely supportive library staff.
NALSAR has weird entrance tests (in google forms in 2023-24) but their evaluation is fair. Their entrance process is very rigorous and would not leave you without giving anxiety shocks. Further, if you are not selected but have a fair proposal, they allow you to present again (don't have to pay any or appear any exam) in the next year slot. I got at NALSAR and chose NUJS. Nevertheless, NALSAR is good, although I am unsure what the current faculty portfolio (along with their current supervisees) would accommodate in tech. There's prof. Sircar in tech (but he too is hardcore IP), but the seasoned tech/IP people have largely left. KVK Santhy mam is v.good but she's largely into cyber. NALSAR Ph.D. is a race you'll have to catch up after your mandatory and rigorous 15 days coursework. Some of my friends doing their Ph.D. with NALSAR have only forgotten about it currently, and it seems even the Uni may offbeat have forgotten about them in return (3 years, and no annual fee reminders).
GNLU (4k application fee though) is also a good place to do your Ph.D. and their testing process is also quite good. Even their coursework is well-organised, hasslefree and very channelised I heard. However, if your proposal is staunch on anti-state dissent in policy, action programmes, the likelihood of its selection is doubtful. I gave same script interviews, with same proposal on back-to-back days (yes, on back-to-back days) at NUJS and GNLU respectively, I was not even selected in the top 60 (30 selected and 30 waitlisted) in GNLU and secured top 10 at NUJS.
Both interviews were tough, grilling, very critical and of the high-quality panel; However, my placement contrast between the two institutions speaks a lot about being the shoe of the right fit.
