I'm a third year and have never done a corp internship before. How do I stand out in the same? To working professionals of LI, what do you guys expect in a intern you'd recommend?? Are there any unsaid rules (such as using SCC instead of Manupatra case citations etc.)? Are there any resources or platforms you should know how to use well? Any insider info or personal observations on the sort of interns who get PPOs? Any sort of advice would be greatly appreciated.
90% of the times we expect interns to be well dressed and well spoken and able to do basic clerical work like writing emails and researching and likes. Now say 20% of total interns fall under the above criteria (because let's be honest it won't make much difference if X knows 20% of work and Y knows 25% or work, at interns and A0 level the work you're made to do is basic mundane which nobody else wants to do) then we check for a reference. Id you're decent and have a reference in your favour then it's a PPO most of the times. Interns from Tier 1 NLUs with great batch ranks get absorbed even without a reference but that's an exception.

For Tier 2 NLUs and SLS/ Jindal there are teams where partners want to pick interns from their college and these teams have dedicated slots for A0 from these colleges.

Other than this if your friend from Christ or SLS Nagpur or Nirma gets a Tier 1 PPO it's almost a reference case (not that they are not smart but as things stand).

Tier 2 PPOs are different Universe and very easy till your final semester.
This is highly skewed and the "reference" point is overstated. If a kid from christ or sls gets a PPO it is because they are better than the rest of the interns, college hardly ever matters during PPO, the team submits your feedback basis your work, half of the team won't even know which year/which college you're from.

College and grades help you get your foot in and during day zero. If you already have an internship then the college will play no role in a PPO.

It is overstated in this particular context. References will help you get an internship 100% but the same does not apply for a PPO. The original comment is saying if you have a reference by your side you'll almost always get a PPO; additionally if any non nlu kids are getting placed it is 100% because of references. This is extremely wrong and references don't work this way. If your work is crap then the firm will throw you out after the one month internship.
Thats how almost all non NLU kids get a PPO at Tier 1 firms 99% of the times. Tier 2 is easier. At Tier 1s your work needs to be good and you need to have a reference. Both are equally important.
You can't expect to stand out when it's your first internship. Towards your 3rd 4th internship when you already know the work, you can stand out purely on the quality of work.

For PPOs: be nice (no one wants a douche in the team), you know your practice area and give out good quality work at par with an a0.
I'm curious as to what is quality work at par with an A0? If you could describe that in detail - in terms of what are the standards of work expected?
No silly mistakes, you know your practice area (had a kid who asked the partner what is a debenture when he was asked to do something on a debenture TD), vetting the documents fr for any inconsistency between clauses instead of just checking punctuation and grammar , etc etc
