I heard that the atmosphere is very political at NLUs. Seniors ask you during interaction which party you support, which you have to state in front of the whole hostel. So is it like the Harry Potter sorting hat that we will be placed into different camps and have to make friends there? In my school and housing society we never make friends on that basis and we never even discuss politics, so that's kind of weird.
It does happen during ragging, but the intention to humiliate rather than discuss politics. At a top 10 NLU, you are asked which party you support and are taunted on the basis of it. If you say BJP, your senior will ask you if you are gay and why all RSS people are bachelors. If you say Congress, your senior will ask you if you have a gay crush on Rahul Gandhi. A lot of the questions are homophobic.
if you are vocal about it or cant stand a person w a diff ideology you will soon find your tribe
and the rest will get cut off on their own
altho for co curricular stuffs ppl do interact and participate together
but the moment you debate on political stuff begins differences get created and for whole five years ppl dont look even you in the eye
i personally preferred not to speak about any of it at all on campus - yet ppl know my affiliations from a lot of different things and even try to provoke me and invite me into debates but i have managed to just safely and stubbornly ignore and avoid
if you are silent busy ambitious diplomatic peace-loving types just want to have a lot of network (yes peer network matters too) and get everyone's favours (it matters a lot in this field) and dont like drama i'll suggest you just be silent and keep yourself busy with your own work
None of this nonsense happens, you will make friends irrespective of your political affiliations.
