Kid, give it a rest. You guys have a domicile quota at NLS now. The guests for your convocation were two Karnataka state ministers. There is nothing national about the place. It’s always been and always will be a state university of Karnataka.
Mod, why have you marked it as contested? The court indeed said so. This was their argument made by ASG Vikramjit Banerjee and the court accepted it. I can paste the exact portions of the judgment. Please stop being prejudiced and un-flag the comment.
Looks like NLS is going on the way of Jiggles. The high fees are very exclusionary to the middle-class only , leave the downtrodden. While certain scholarship requirements are present, most scholarship criteria (not at just NLS) require high grades , extra curriculars etc which large section of students (eg first gen lawyers) won't have. Financial waivers will be mostly contingent to repayment ensuring more students move to corporate law (can't blame them).
NLS thrived before due to it's small batch size, super competitive selection process and the ability of students to learn and explore the law. Having a large batch size gives out a lot more challenges and this can already been seen why recruitment figures have been withheld.
Review Commissions, IDIA Student Diversity Reports etc before have already shown light on the lack of diversity in NLS and other problems like drugs. Hope the new Review Commission puts everything in a new light.
Wth is this? NLS has already had domicile quota and batches have already been admitted under it. There is no going back on that so where is this "truly national" argument even coming from? If anything, NLUD is the only remaining NLU without domicile and is actually located in the national capital (and who knows how long that will last).
Here's further evidence of how the Karnataka Govt will hold on to NLSIU, and domicile quota is critical for them. And quota is a sensitive topic, hence no one wants to take a call on that. Judges are recusing en-masse.
That decision does not lie with NLS but with Karnataka Govt. This has been discussed in another thread. If the Karnataka government does not "let go" of NLS as a state institution with a formal NOC, it is not going to happen. States not letting go of their institutions is not new. WB Govt did not give the NOC to Jadavpur U in 2005 when there was a proposal to make it into an IIT. Once the state government does not give NOC, the central government moves on. Jadavpur is still a state institution. Under the current scenario, the relationship between the Centre and the Karnataka Govt is not at all amicable - Karnataka just scrapped the NEP. Plus don't underestimate the importance of state domicile reservation for Karnataka Govt.
