But do not ever use contacts, they will not help you at all at this stage and will im fact only hinder growth as you will be viewed as incompetent.

Worst advice. This person is trying to wipe out competition or maybe doesn't have contracts do doesn't want anyone else too to have an edge. USE ALL YOUR CONTACTS. Its either now or never.

The economy, the job market or these law firms do not operate on hope. Having hope is always good. But one must keep their eyes open and prepare for the worst as well when things appear to go downhill. Those who will acknowledge the recession first, will be in a better position to explore other things or navigate their options. All the best everyone.
