What if somebody wants to pursue academia in "foren"? That toh is ruled out for lower middle class people like us right?
and a little rich
Pick traditional government Universities for LLM and PHD over NLUs (ILI, GLC and CLC) as they are more affordable and don't treat Post Grads as second class students.
After LLM and UGC NET opt for a Part time PhD and work as an Associate Professor/Teaching assistant if you want to earn money and support your family.
Then of course, after 5 years or so, you can go abroad for a double masters or a full time PhD. Full time PhD are usually highly sponsored abroad (if you get a teaching assistantship, you won't have to spend anything). Even for LLM, you'll have great publications and academic experience, so you can get a substantial scholarships. For the rest 15-20 lacs, you can easily save that up through 5 years of Indian academia. The pay ain't that bad; after 7th CPC plus dearness allowance, you'll easily make more than 50 lacs over the course of 5 years.
1. Get a T1 firm job out of law school and work there for 2-3 years. That should be enough to not only pay off your loan for your UG studies (if any) but also cover your living expenses abroad for an LLM (if you decide to go for it).
2. However, I agree with the view expressed above that if you are short of money, try getting an LLM from ILI CLC GLC etc. because most NLUs simply won't care. But this does not hold true for top NLUs like NLS NLUD NALSAR etc. It is far easier for someone with a foreign LLM to join these places.
3. Once you are done with LLM, most NLUs will let you pursue a PhD while being a research/teaching fellow there. This will ensure you don't shell out more for your PhD and also earn some money.
4. Once you are done with your PhD and join as an Assistant Professor, you can live a reasonably comfortable life. The path to Professorship would be around 10-15 yrs and once Professor, you can make at least 24 LPA+in most NLUs.
