The entitlement and bigotry of forward castes on this thread is shocking. You are against extra marks being given to a few backward caste students just to give them the minimum pass mark? How are these students a threat to your precious CAM placements and jobs? They won't make it to CAM with these marks and will instead target the public sector or lower-tier court advocates. How can you be so inhumane to deny them that? It's not that you all want these low-paying jobs are coveted by you, since your aim is CAM. So what's the problem here? How are you harmed if a Dalit student with a low GPA applies for the job of a government/ officer judicial officer/chamber junior in UP or Bihar?

Oof! So much arguing when the solution is perfectly simple:

1. Grace marks to SC/ST/OBC to help them pass

2. No resit fees for them

3. Have an exit tour if they can’t cope. IITs have already done this by allowing them to graduate with a BSc instead of BTech. Law schools can similarly allow a BA degree exit. The humanities credits are easiest to pass.

That’s a very poor theory of mind for why people commit suicides. Failing one mid semester exam in law school is not determinative of who commits suicide.

The instructors job is to mark fairly- you either know the answer to the question posed or you don’t. It’s not to decide who is a suicide risk and give them free marks.

Any normally developed young person should be able to fail a couple of exams once in a while and take it in their stride and go on to improve themselves. That’s the point of examinations. That’s the whole point of academic life. If you’re not able to - you need better intervention than someone giving you marks you didn’t earn.

Look up Jason arday, look at what social promotion does. It only sets people up for greater and greater failures. People who lie to you aren’t being kind to you. An instructor who lies to you about your answer script or your readiness for job market isn’t being kind to you- they’re setting you up for greater failure because they value them feeling good in short term over you actually succeeeing long term.

Yes, the suicides WILL stop if those 10 marks are the difference between pass and fail. If you just give SC/ST/OBC students the bare required pass mark instead of failing, that will make a huge difference. It will make them eligible for government jobs that have reservation, give them the stamp of an IIT grad etc. In doing so, given them pride and their whole community pride. It won't give them jobs with Tesla in Palo Alto, but that is not what they want and they are not competing with the GC toppers. Just make them pass, that's all.

Why 5 more marks ? Why not 20 ? Why not 50? Why not decide how many oppression points each person has and then set different benchmarks for them based on 3000 years of poverty and psychological trauma ? Most people in this country are poor or have had parents who were poor. Most people have psychological trauma.

The exams aren’t meant for privileged elites - they’re not asking you to recite the vedas or asking you to sail yachts. They’re asking you questions about materials they have spent a semester teaching you. Just study, pay attention in class, take notes, study with friends, see what your class toppers do and copy them.

Honestly there’s laziness and then there’s something worse. This is something worse- law subjects are not hard - anyone with an IQ over hundred is well capable of learning the subjects - it’s not quantum physics you don’t need to be a genius- you just need to put in the work. It’s one thing to try and get every advantage you can - it’s another thing that’s actually evil - to use the death of a person or the horrors of the caste system - to try and get some petty advantage in academics.

Because the prof is asked by the admin that they should maintain students under matrix. No students could like to fail either with relevant issues. If they are 30 students in a elective then only few students should get outstanding other A+ , b+ , b , c and later so on there should be failures as well. All cant pass the course if if they have given their best. They maintain a matrix.

A) By saying this, are you implying that general caste students from tier 2 or tier 3 cities have exposure to English, or that mental health issues compounded by generational trauma are solely those of the backward castes?
B) In the sense of waiver of fees, wouldn't it be necessary for a person of EWS status coming from a general caste as much as for one of the backward castes?

Caste and academic underperformance/overperformance and intrinsically linked. So fair to give concessions in marks and waiver in fees to repeat students from oppressed caste backgrounds. Also fair to ask non-EWS savarna students to pay more, which can be used to offset the financial losses from the fee waiver.

Let's apply logic to your contention. A teacher's salary remains the same whether there is any student repeating their course or not. A student repeating the course means additional workload to a teacher. Therefore logically a teacher tries their level best to ensure that no student has to repeat their course. Despite that, if students are regularly repeating their course, then what else can the university do to discourage that? Impose an additional fee requirement. Which it has done. So I see no problem here.

Extremely ableist and casteist comments here. Ask yourselves, why students have a year back in the first place? Those from backward caste backgrounds often have low exposure to English. So they are struggling in a where everything is in English. Then mental health issues compound the problem, because of generational trauma carried by them. So a waiver in the fees is the least that can be done to help backward caste students.

once one reaches NLS, their caste doesn't play a role in making them sit and study. Your caste can only give you an easy entry to NLS but not make you pass exams in the uni. ▮▮▮

Because most of them don't have valid extenuating circumstances like illness or death of family member/loved one. They are just lazy people who sit on their arses, doing nothing, expecting to be spoonfed. NLSIU needs a break financially from someone, might as well take it from those who think they can milk the system.

I feel there can be a three-tier structure which balances the plight of the students and the need of NLSIU for funds:

1. For general category students: Charge the whole amount

2. For SC/ST/OBC students: Full waiver

3. For EWS students who are not SC/ST/OBC: 50% waiver.
