Honestly it just seems like a faction of Nalsar students are so attention hungry they’re aping the worst excesses of students in America. And American institutions like HYS can do this and come back - they have hundreds of years of history, NALSAR is not even 30 years old- if its students antagonise the legal profession and the public in their quest for social media points - I’m not so sure what will remain of it.
NALSAR is an institution in itself and in the country, and a comparison with American unis is a false equivalence. Politicians in Telangana invoke its name in their campaigns, and it will have a constant stream of legal and judicial experts without fail. Speaking out against the institution, at the university level as well as the national level, is their right, and also the very essence of NALSAR. And also a veiled message against NALSAR leadership that wants to use the convocation to further its own political agenda. If you have a problem with people speaking their minds freely and publicly, go to Pakistan (lol).
What exactly has surya Kant done to earn this ? Is it that he supports a political party- or is seen to support a party - that Nalsar students dislike ? If that’s enough reason to behave in so uncivil and discourteous a manner - I’m afraid these students will have a rude shock coming to them when they go into the profession where most professionals are right wing.
It is of course students right to be as stupid as they’d like - just as it is mine to call them on it. I really think maybe their educators have failed them at this point. It absolutely is not the essence of Nalsar to be entitled and ignorant and to engage in cancel culture. The essence of Nalsar - was developing deep thoughtful young people who were committed to being good lawyers.
I am an Indian student at one of the British unis this person spoke at (defiled with his presence) earlier this year when he visited UK. Trust me, you don't wanna be in the same room with him. He really is not a nice man, at all. To think that this was a representation of my country abroad made me want to jump in front of a moving car, literally.
I may not know a lot about Indian politics, but what I do know is that this guy is a darling of the right wing and called young people in India struggling for jobs and a basic standard of living a name I will never use. He also dismissed accusations of police brutality without any form of due process. That's all that any person needs to know. Plus, he got some thugs-turned-gentlemen that work at our high commission here and have therefore adopted a veneer of respectability to bully the event organisers at my uni into pre-selecting (in advance) only certain students to answer questions after his speech, rather than ensuring that a democratic, random selection of students who raised their hands was done. Even if I don't know a shit load about Indian politics, I know enough Orwell to remember what he says about keeping on the right side of the party line.
Also, when did I say that it's an offence for people I don't like to "exist in the world"? Idiot rich kid I may be (I dispute that characterisation by the way), but I at least understand basic English. Please learn to read. Go back to your school, do pranam to your teachers, ask for forgiveness for wasting their time and admit to them that you weren't paying attention when they were teaching basic reading, then ask them to please repeat the lessons for you. Existing in the world doesn't mean being legitimised and lorded by educational institutions. It literally means what it says on the tin: going about your life freely, expressing your views without fear of state reprisal, associating with whom you will, etc. If he comes along and speaks at some student event at the uni, it's their problem. They want to listen to bad ideas, I don't care. But this is the institution giving him a stamp of approval by calling him to their graduation ceremony. Totally different. Also, when did I say I liked any other CJI at all? You're doing a remarkable level of extrapolation. Sign of a TLC education in India? Reliable sources indicate NLU graduates wouldn't make such breathtaking logical mistakes. If he has the right to his free speech, then so do I and all the NALSAR students protesting against him.
Please prove, with facts, citations, statistics and evidence, what this guy has done to further the rule of law in India and I'll consider taking back what I said.
It is also amusing how sanctimonious you sound while attempting to correct other people’s grammar and language, even as you make elementary semantic errors and commit logical fallacies. You openly admit that you are largely oblivious to Indian politics, yet attempt to pronounce authoritatively on whether particular judgments favour the Union Government. Sit this one out, please, and do 'consider' taking back what you said.
He called fake degree holders parasites. You may disagree with him - but baseline expectation is you actually know what he did to earn or not earn your condemnation. Is the Supreme Court the port of first call for every instance of police brutality in the country ? Was he simply trying to get on with his business - judging cases that actually were properly in the supreme courts jurisdiction instead of turning the court into a stage for a politicised media trial ? Honestly you sound quite uninformed and uneducated.
Which ideas of his are bad actually ? Why can’t students listen to ideas they disagree with once in a while ? What terrible thing would happen? What is your obsession with ideological purity ?
And let’s be real - Nalsar doesn’t provide a platform for the chief justice of India. Regardless of what these students do - he has already reached the goals he likely had in his professional life- goals almost none of these students will likely be able to reach. The only thing no platforming does - is reduce civility and polarise discourse in a democracy. It only puts you in a SILO - it’s not liberal - this is an anti-liberal move.
You absolutely have the freedom of speech to be as stupid as you’d like - but other people can call cancel culture what it is and they can decide your arguments are stupid. And ultimately - I’d hold the adults in your life responsible for failing to inculcate enlightenment values in you.
I understand for someone who hasn’t achieved much else in their professional life they want to assume that their opponents will always be poorly educated. In any case - you may choose to bury your head in the sand and not believe me - but I graduated from Nalsar- near the top of my class, and went on to do remarkably well. I’m actually a favorite son of the institution. Neither of our qualifications - should weigh into whether our arguments are valuable. That’s just base credentialism. Something NLU students would grow out of in their first year.
But throwing a tantrum over not liking the CJI and insulting him is a bigger achievement ? Why ? Jesus this institution has to do a better job teaching its students how to think.
A video that has surfaced on the internet recently shows senior journalist Aman Chopra allegedly being harassed by Jharkhand Police amid his coverage around the ongoing student protests in Ranchi. In the viral video, Chopra, a senior journalist associated with the Network 18 group can be seen being approached by the cops while he was reportedly having breakfast. He calmly asks the cops why he is being questioned when they asked him to join them for questioning. He can also be seen confronting the cops in a room, trying to fetch a reason behind his alleged detention. Cops can be heard saying, "His acts have been disrupting their duty."
