Shubhankar Dam is not an academic comparable with Sudhir. He is FAR BETTER than Sudhir. Please compare the quality of publications by both of them. However, Shubhankar will never be VC because he is completely outspoken and completely honest. He does not network or suck up to people. He does not seek fame or fortune, he only wants academic recognition.

ur concern is fair; however, the cutoffs going down by 50-100 ranks is the least of anyone's concern. The opinion of CLAT aspirants on NLU rankings is of no real value and does not affect anything; what matters is the opinion of the bar/firms and partners/ and NIRF to some extent, all of which still place NUJS ahead of NLUJ/GNLU/NLIU. In any case, there is no serious difference in merit between most students below AIR 500 in CLAT, just some who got more lucky on D-Day.

LIVE BREAKING: Swapan Dasgupta has just presented the state’s new budget. He made two important announcements on education:

1. He announced a merit scholarship for state students who get admission to QS-ranked colleges across India. As far as law is concerned, the top 3 NIRF NLUs feature in the latest QS Law ranking: NLSIU, NALSAR and NLUD. Plus Jindal. In the general QS ranking, there is IIT KGP, Symbiosis and DU, all of which have law schools. So possible scholarships for law students headed here?

2. IIT and IIM to be set up in North Bengal. Relevant if they offer postgrad courses that law students can take - IIM certainly will.

No sops for NUJS, of course, but that is to be expected from a university that has never hosted him as a speaker (AFAIK) and has not been very hospitable towards the right (the cancellation of invites to Jagdeep Dhankhar and J Sai Deepak being two examples).

Ironically, JU is a QS-ranked university, with OG hardcore leftists. The wannabe leftists (who happily join capitalist law firms after graduation) are yet to crack QS. 😂

There's only one alum who is a senior enough academic (professor for ten years), Shubhankar Dam. But his relationships with the political and judicial powers in India aren't cordial, so he will never be made VC here. He also does not have a PhD, despite having been a professor for long and an excellent academic comparable with Sudhir himself. There are some people from the first batch who are teaching at Jindal who may qualify soon, but why would they come back with such a pay cut and take upon admin roles? Almost all Jindal professors get paid way more than any NLU VC. Sudhir had the academic ambition. Mrinal or Nigam may. It need not be an NUJS alum necessarily. Saurabh will, eventually.

I can't believe people like you are going to be my seniors. When juniors have valid concerns based on what seems to be the truth, you clarify and help them out. All you guys seem to do is harp on about how NUJS is still the best and how there's nothing wrong with it. No wonder most CLAT 2026 rankers opted for NLUJ/GNLU over NUJS. Gone are the days when cutoffs were ~250; its been ~350 for the past 2 years.

I have heard that there are students who opt for NLUJ, NLIU, GNLU over NUJS due to campus constraints, college life, and overall perception of the University being on a downfall. This is really concerning and NUJS really should pull up their pants if they want to continue as the third/fourth best NLU.

Just one point on the governing bodies. It’s true that governing bodies were full of eminent people during the Menon/Chimni/Singh years during the reign CM Buddhadev Bhattacharya, only to be replaced by third-rate political hoodlums during Mamata’s rule. BUUUT the government has now changed!!! There’s a MASSIVE opportunity to bring in qualified people into the governing bodies

One positive thing that has happened is that the pack of criminals running the state for 15 years have left and a very erudite person, with a PhD from SOAS, has become Finance Minister. Last time this happened was when Asim Dasgupta (a PhD from MIT) was Finance Minister, under the Left government. I think a delegation of alumni and students should seek an appointment with Swapan Dasgupta and make a case for reforming NUJS. Start with inducting good people in the governing bodies and top alumni of NLUs.

It has been 8 months of OVN's reign. The guy is hardly ever there. Maybe he had anticipated Modiji's call for WFH? Runs back to Bengaluru at the slightest opportunity. Refuses to take any decision. Appointed a few completely useless peeps as Deans most of whom don't have a brain cell between themselves. They keep running like headless chicken all over the place w/o making any real decision either. The place is even more of a mess than it used to be under NKC (good riddance though). Some students do absolutely whatever they like without any repercussion, faculty and students are dating, other faculty are blackmailing students to write papers for them in exchange of marks, a bunch of completely insane people are masquerading as LLM students. Yet other blowhards keep pointing out things that don't suit their agenda, but won't lift a finger to do anything themselves. Admin staff are only concerned about their next pay increment and have forgotten how to get anything done. Most students even in their final year hardly have any knowledge of law and are hoping that alum would save them. Majority can't write a line without AI slop. Hasn't won any competition of note in years. The days of Vac Schemes and TCs are long gone, let alone Rhodes. Hostel has no space, acad block is crumbling right from the stairs to the ACs. Governing body is full of clowns only there to make money and favours for their coterie at the students' expense. Whoever thought this VC would change stuff for the better is bonkers. The guy is all talk and disappears when it's time to do the walk. He's eyeing Messiah's post as soon as it is available, but I doubt Law School is gonna take him back either. There is literally no hope left for this place, although most other NLUs are in even worse shape. The difference is that students in most places at least want their uni to be better, here even that is hopeless.
