I have secured a good enough rank to be able to join either law school for the next 5 year, and since then i have been in a tough position and unable to make my decision.(Cost is not an issue in this case, with scholarship both will come down to roughly the same)

GLC MUMBAI

Pros-

1. Has the better brand name.

2. Proximity to the bombay high court and all the major law firms. Better opportunity at networking and attending conferences etc.

3. Attendance is lax.

4. I can do running internships. Won't have to travel for internships (this will save money in the long run)

5. Gorgeous city (makes up for the bad infrastructure?).

Cons-

1. Outdated syllabus. 2+3 learning module, won't be taught any major law subjects until third year.

2. Heard that the college is trying to mandate the 75% attendance rule (the biggest downside for glc?).

3. I am not the most interested in the studying BLS.

4. I have been told by many that the college is declining and will only get worse in the next 5 years.

5. Afraid of slacking here (because I will have to be on my own completely)?

MNLU NAGPUR

Pros-

1. Excellent Syllabus ( I'm much interested in business and law and here I get to study BBA LLB)

2. Has got a structure to it that might make law school easier to navigate.

3. Growing NLU. Will likely be doing a lot better in future, (and maybe overtake GLC if the latter keep declining?).

4. Gorgeous Campus.

5. Will get to intern a total of 4 months a year (will have to skip a few days of classes).

Cons-

1. Is still looked down and considered a T-3.

2. Strict attendance. 5 marks in internals is based on attendance %, which I am definitely going to lose.

3.Away from the city and not a whole lot to do there.

4. Won't be able to network freely here.

5. Placement average is much lower.

I have talked to a few seniors at both the colleges and MNLUN seniors have recommended to go for GLCM, whereas GLCM seniors have asked m to stay away from GLC and had put weight of the NLU tag.

For context,

I plan of choosing a corporate career, mainly in m&a, because mumbai is the m&a hub of India, I'm leaning towards GLC but the syllabus and growing attendance criteria there is making me hesitate. I would love to live in south bombay, but not at the cost of getting stuck at a place I'm going to regret later.

Whereas MNLUN seems to provide a fairly stable environment and that definitely sounds more reassuring wen put against the situation of glc right now as mentioned above.

I would appreciate if you elaborate your answers so I am able to make a informed decision.

As a GLC grad, I know for a fact that the cons you listed are real but as someone who has entered the profession recently, I will still recommend you to join GLC particularly when you are inclined towards getting into corporate.

Glc has, hands downs, a great alumni base, strong placement cell, opportunity to intern year round, attendance system is also very manageable despite of the strictness. It will give you the freedom to explore, the opportunity to build great connections and learn from some of the best professors (despite of the other so-so ones).

But you'll have to be prepared to face the lax administration, inadequate infrastructure, and your only catalyst there would be self-motivation.

As of date, MNLUN still has a long way to catch up with GLC's repo.

Hey! Thanks so much for sharing your opinion, i have a few more specific things i would like to ask, one of which is the 1st con listed for GLC, that is the outdated syllabus and 2+3 learning module.

My question is, since students cannot rely on the college for learning the law especially in the initial year, what do students then do to catch up to the NLU students from the same year?

And secondly, how are students at GLC able to secure internships without the same knowledge of law that nlu Without classroom learning and possibly time spent on learning on our own, how do students manage both internships and self study?

Are these students who are interning all year round or for the most part, taking part in competitions, writing papers etc, also able to score well and maintain a good rank?

One more question that i would like to ask which i hadn't put forth earlier is regarding the ADR competitions at GLC, I have heard it extremely competitive (as expected), but still if you can tell whether students there get equal opportunities to participate, by that i mean to build the competition cv from smaller competitions to bigger ones ofcourse. Also are participants supposed to arrange for their own funds to compete for national or local level competitions?, I have seen funding Boucher for international competitions, not sure of for the smaller ones. Is there any specific criteria where you have to be in a certain year of study to be able to take part in certain competitions or everything is skill based?

Consider GLC for the following reasons:

1. You have free afternoons/evenings which you can use to do your articleship in a good law firm for solicitor exam.

2. You save money which you can later use to do LLM from abroad, QLTS, etc.

3. Connections/Network in Bombay Bar and law firm circuit can go a long way in catapulting your career in 5 years.

Anyway, put your maximum effort wherever you join (GLC or MNLU-N) and you will outshine.
