Let him crack CLAT first, NLU’s are not great environments for neurodivergent folks, they lack basic facilities and your child will be living alone with no support systems, a toxic and stressful environment that is exceptionally hard. Would recommend enrolling your son in a good university close to home.

What kind of issues does your child have? The answer to your question could depend on that.

I do wish to add that the law (disputes or corporate), by its very nature, is not the best suited place for neurodivergent individuals. There are high pressure environments, difficult deadlines, need to handle multiple things at the same time, unreasonable people, unpleasant people, strong competition with almost everyone, need for good social skills (manage difficult people (upwards or downwards), get clients, etc.) which are all essential for a successful legal career. Legal practice can also affect mental health and those issues can get magnified for some neurodivergent people. As a neurodivergent person who went to a tier 1 NLU, a lot of people here are neurodivergent and can thrive here as well. Let's not reinforce negative stereotypes, the journey and experience in an NLU might be different for a neurodivergent person but doesn't mean that a lot of opportunities are inaccessible.

Every draw back mentioned here is something neurotypical and neurodivergent is going to have to deal with. That said not every NLU is going to provide the same level of mental health support, and it would be wise to inquire with alumni and students to understand the level of support your child might get there.

Don't listen to the people below. Yes, NLUs are stressful, and the legal profession is demanding and requires hard work. So do most other competitive fields. Consider the pressures faced by medical residents during training. That said, many neurodivergent children benefit from structure. Structure does not mean a rigid timetable or giving up everything enjoyable in life; it means having a clear goal and a clear process for getting there. Sit down with your child and make a realistic plan. Start small.

Hi! I just wanted to say that your post really resonated with me.

I'm on the autism spectrum and have moderate to high ADHD. I graduated from a Tier 2 private law school a few years ago, and honestly, law school was tough. Academics were never my strong suit, but dropping out wasn't an option, so I just kept going.
I figured that I should focus on internships because I knew practical experience would matter more for me than grades.

Things did work out in the end. I don't work at a law firm, but I have a job I genuinely like, with kind people and a healthy work environment. Looking back, I spent so much time worrying that my grades would decide my future, but they didn't.

So if I can offer one bit of reassurance, it's this: your son's neurodivergence doesn't mean he can't have a successful legal career. The path might look a little different, and he may need to find what works for him, but it's absolutely possible. I know because I had the same doubts about myself.

I will advise him to reassess his career choice. This profession requires high degree of interpersonal and communication skills. There are lots of other careers where you can succeed without the above skills (like tech, cybersecurity, data analytics, biotech, pharma, etc from the stem spectrum and accountancy, finance, actuary, etc from non-stem )

Neurodivergence, as with any other fields, will be a hurdle in law as its not at all accessible to people who do not fit a certain mould of lawyers. It starts with the entire NLU v. Non-NLUs fights, and then the Tier-1, 2, 3 firm debates, and finally, the ideal lawyer stereotype relating to their working styles, demeanours (for example: our coffee machines at CAM literally show pictures of white, well-groomed males with straight, short hair as the 'ideal' look for lawyers, or people who want to work on side-projects or their healths or relationships are often looked down upon and not considered good lawyers because what are you even doing outside office that is worth it?).

Sadly, law, and especially, if your son wants to do the stereotypical law (corporate houses or firms in a tier-1 city) is a highly, highly stereotyping profession that does not tolerate any divergence at all. There might be one-off examples here and there where the professors/tutors in education, and partners/teams in employment might be sensitive to the specific needs of a person, but these are so far and few and minuscule that it's not worth considering them. I see some of the comments here pointing out similar advice as negative, or stereotyping law, but that's just how law looks on the ground, and I'd rather your son have real overview of the profession than bullshit wrapped in golden foil of positivity and inclusion. Law is not there yet, and to promise someone that, especially when they are hoping to base a major portion of their life on it, is just wrong and misleading.

Studying law could be wonderful, and with the right peers/support groups, you son might have a wonderful time, but the professional law would not be this accommodating I am afraid. So my advice would be to consider alternative employments in law (if your son has genuine interest in law itself), that offer more agency to him, even though if it comes on the cost of reduced earnings, or stereotypical prestige lawyers are so boastful of [right now, freelance work comes to mind as a potential area of work, but I am sure it has its unique challenges, which freelancers would be better suited to comment on].

I think he would do well at any college of his choosing (maybe even by cracking CLAT and getting a T1 NLU). Most colleges have been pushing for better mental health support as well, such as NLIU Bhopal partnering with an online platform and a counsellor on campus, NLSIU Bengaluru also has similar mental health support. So law colleges are also moving in a manner where they want better inclusivity.

I am a neurodivergent lawyer who studied in one of the NLUs. I was pretty average in exams but i found my strong forte in writing research papers and public speaking. Eventually i pursued a career in academia which kind of is a suitable profession for people like me i feel. Just a suggestion
