I'm a first-generation lawyer and my family isn't very connected i.e they never “pulled any strings” for me.
I'm purely into litigation so my career graph has emerged that way only. I started with a random chamber in Delhi and made my way up to it. The “connections” I'm talking about is the boss and other people at workplace. Co-interns, very well-connected friends at my NLU. I've gotten their recommendations but I always had to burn the midnight oil. To be very honest its an endless cycle of grinding and getting recommended. First it began in chambers then the seniors started recommending to T1s.
On paper my internships might look 90% connections and 10% on my own (and even those are the by-product of my CV), but only I know three years ago I had absolutely no opportunities and I didn't know what I was supposed to do.
I believe networking is the bread-butter for a first-generation lawyer and if you're a competent person, connections will get you just the best opportunity. Grind yourself to the bone there and reap the rewards!
