but NRI quota has zero comparable logic. there's no historical exclusion being corrected. there's no structural disadvantage being addressed. the only thing that qualifies you is that your parents have money and live abroad. that's it. one is a policy rooted in social justice (however imperfectly implemented), the other is just buying a seat and calling it something else. equating the two isn't a gotcha. it's just conflating completely different things.
unfortunately, it does not allow so we take the NRI Spon route
have a look at the financial statement of your uni, its usually available on their website, take a look at the precarious nature of the financial balance, NLUs are self financing institutions, most NLUs dont have any buffer, some of them came perliously close to accounting bankruptcy during covid. IIMs also work on simial rmodel, but they have much better financial reserve.
check out NALSAR in FM time, see how the reserves changed, that is a model case, unfortunately others (except a very few) do not follow a simialr path, so most NLUs are living hand to mouth. just cust off one semster fees and the entire edifice collapses
also someone above already suggested just auctioning the seats with a minimum rank cutoff. if it's purely a revenue mechanism, which everyone in this thread has basically admitted, then at least do it transparently. the current setup is just a polite fiction
If you want NRI seats to be abolished, then so should caste quota seats — IF your logic is meritocracy.
A 1000+ ranked person getting through the NRI quota is far better than a 21000+ ranked person from the reserved quota. That's the last rank for NLS (as an example), which got in. It is worse for other NLUs. This is the merit aspect.
so by recruiting 10 nri seats in effect the revenue is increased by 30 and get around the 120 limit set by bci
When sudhir at nlsiu recognises the misuse of these quotas and suspends them defacto from his university, I don't get why nluj or nujs don't follow suit. Are these nlus really in such dire need of money?
