Plus senior advocates in Cal HC and other people like Kalyan Bandopadhyay, Kunal Chatterjee etc. If AMS and Sibal charged 30 crores in all, does this mean all these others were paid from the remaining 70 crores? That’s a HUGE disparity! 2 people take 30% of the pot and the remaining 70% must be distributed among 20-30 people at least???

Not a surprise at all. Singhvi and Sibal are probably among the richest lawyers in the whole world. The other lawyers mentioned won’t charge more than a lakh or two per hearing. The rates by Aquilaw and Debanjan Mandal will be even lesser. Aquilaw isn’t even a proper firm in that sense: just an extension of the TMC’s legal cell.

In fact, I am surprised that Sibal and Singhvi’s share is 1/3. I would have thought it would have been 50% (although Mamata did gift Singhvi a Rajya Sabha seat from Bengal).

Not sure about the amounts paid to each senior counsel you mentioned , ie. K. Sibal and AM. Singhvi. These two, along with a few others like Rakesh Dwivedi and firms like Aquilaw and FM (the red one) seem to frequently represent the State of WB in almost all matters. J Gupta rather not so much. What's sad is that the Calcutta Bar gave exemplary members to the SC Bar, like Barry Sen, Niren De, NC Chatterjee, Somnath Chatterjee, Ashok Sen, Dipankar Gupta, Bhaskar Gupta, SC Roy, S S Ray, etc etc. They, or even members of the Calcutta Bar, including the Advocate General (who were, and still are regarded as the leader of the Bar, like Sir S.M. Bose, S.D Banerjee, B.C. Ray, J. Mitra, B. Chatterjee, A. Mitra, SN Mookherjee, etc) used to come down to SC even till perhaps the early 2000s (subject to correction). Today, its these seniors whom you mentioned who do the matters in SC. About the 100cr being spent, you can find it in the budget itself, and that is indeed true. Its perhaps more than what the State paid to its own AG and standing counsels in the state itself. Such details are available in the state budget, and not only can you find the same for WB, but for other states as well

KC is the nephew of state law minister and started as a junior of senior advocate Jaideep Gupta. JG is the son of Dipankar Gupta who was probably the youngest AG of WB when SS Ray was the CM. Among the famous DG juniors were Justices Leila Seth and Ruma Pal and the spouse of the latter Samaraditya Pal.

Along with AMS and KS, JG is also a regular for WB.

Btw, AMS gave a measly 1.5 cr from his MPLAD to NUJS when he got in with TMC support. Contrast that with his endowments to Jiggles. The less said about KS, the better. Barkha may still be willing to talk about it.

💯 👏And that’s why the SJA should be careful about which alumni and senior counsels to seek help from, regarding misgovernance at NUJS. At the end of the day, the students are just in their teens and early 20s, so very gullible and naive.

The fact is that you will only get help from alumni and senior counsels who are aligned with the TMC’s main opponents, ie Left and BJP. You will have to get political about who you approach — like it or not. Only the reds and saffronites will come to your aid, simple as that.

The mass in Bengal will never vote for BJP because of its undue interference in people's personal lives. What people eat, wear, where they go to, with whom, when they can step out. Plus the divisive politics and zero idea about Bengal's culture. And there's no difference between Bengal BJP and TMC, those two parties have a revolving door between them.
