Interestingly, if one of the dual papers is a back log subject, it is reasonably expected that the candidate had an additional semester to prepare for it - so it's not like the back log candidate is studying for an additional subject in the same time frame as other candidates who are preparing for lesser subjects in the same time.
Also, demanding staff to work an additional day or asking university to pay teachers for overtime (which will be paid for by the state and / or all students, even the ones who are not giving back log examination) is really a sign of significant entitlement. The money can be better utilized elsewhere.
In 2023, the current Registrar, Mr. Rangin Pallav Tripathi, introduced an unjust academic policy that has made students’ lives exceedingly difficult. Under this policy, those with backlog papers — not necessarily due to failure, but often because of genuine personal or medical reasons — are required to appear for them alongside their regular end-semester examinations.
The result? Students are being forced to write two examinations on the same day — one from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and another from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. When this issue was raised with the Dean, Mrs. Paromita Chattoraj, her response was that students with backlogs are “different” and must bear the consequences of their situation. According to her, it is not the University’s responsibility to accommodate every individual’s needs.
However, this entire problem could have been resolved with a simple administrative adjustment — by making Saturdays working days during the examination period. But to our dismay, this suggestion was rejected by the Controller of Examinations, Mrs. Suman Dash Bhattamishra (who also happens to be the spouse of Mr. Tripathi), citing that the staff cannot be expected to work more than five days a week.
To these authorities, I have only one appeal: try to be compassionate, humane, and understanding toward your own students. We are not cattle. Over the years, we have lost several of our peers to overwhelming academic pressure. Do not let your vague and apathetic policies add more names to that list. It is easy to shed tears when tragedy strikes — but perhaps it is time you realise that your indifference is what pushes students to the edge in the first place.
