Although frequent exits are common in this practice area, Indus Transactions has witnessed a particularly high attrition rate over the past year. Cluster B, in particular, has been hit the hardest — it went from having four partners and a team of over 25 professionals last year to just one junior partner supported by a small team of three to four members now.

Clusters A and C are in relatively better shape, but they too have experienced a notable number of departures. The overall trend reflects broader dissatisfaction across teams, primarily due to the imbalance between workload and compensation.

While Indus Transactions handles a workload comparable to that of top-tier (T1) firms, its pay structure doesn’t match up. As such, joining might make sense only if you’re unable to secure an offer from a T1 firm or are looking for exposure despite the compensation gap.

Hi, I hope you are doing well. But attaching high hopes with Indus is just wishful thinking I believe. They are doing massive cost cutting: (1) snacks have been discontinued; (2) similar is the case with office cabs and oh I almost forgot (3) stipend to the interns.

Apparently, people are being asked to leave especially in the litigation pratice.

Indus is offering better pay than SAM which I am 100% sure of. My friend at SAM Mumbai at the same level as I, made 5 lakhs less than me last year (including the discretionary bonus), 2 lakhs if you remove the discretionary bonus that is paid in July. Indus for sure has, if not better, at least competitive pay at par with AZB, and higher than JSA unless you are homegrown JSA associate in a good billing team which takes your bill share to a higher number.

Only firms that I know of paying better than Indus is CAM and KCO and the difference is only a few lakhs.

But I would take that any day over getting my pqe discounted, being treated like shit in a sea of 1000 lawyers.

As to cost cutting, snacks have been discontinued because of mass wastage of food across offices, specially in Delhi. If there was really cost cutting and the firm struggling, why would they be taking all 5 offices to Vietnam this December for a 4 day office retreat? For attritions, they haven't really been attritions given that the partners have moved laterally with associates.

But anyway, stay happy in your delusional world while you "stand by" till 2 in the night for matters that don't even reach your email.

I understand your confidence in Indus, but there are a few things to consider. First, comparing pay across different practices is tricky, as compensation often depends on practice area and seniority. While Indus may seem competitive, it hasn't revised pay in a while, unlike other firms like AZB and JSA. JSA’s bill-sharing system allows associates to earn more, even if their base salary seems lower. Regarding work-life balance, while it may appear Indus offers a better environment, I’ve heard complaints about specific seniors making juniors’ lives miserable, leading to attrition. The Vietnam retreat feels like a distraction when basic perks like pay revisions and snacks are cut due to cost-saving measures. As for attrition, it’s not just partners moving laterally, many associates are leaving due to poor conditions. It’s not about being “delusional,” but about seeking a fair balance of compensation, respect, and a healthier work environment.

Have interned in Indus and its quite true every associate working (A1s, SAs and PAs) there felt like they haven't slept for months, and they also pay the stipend so late like 3 months after the internship end also the snack cost cutting is so true. I have also interned at Kochhar and Co Bangalore which is just right next to Indus Law, and it was a better experience as they provided us not only snacks but also lunch.

One of the funniest situations that I got to know about at Indus recently. How a junior partner brought down the entire team after two senior partners left the team. Despite having no clients of their own, and with no conversation/discussion with the team members, this junior partner requested to continue leading the team alone. Even though multiple opportunities were offered to merge the team with others over the following months, the junior partner remained adamant about holding on to the team.

Fast forward to today, and team members are being shuffled around and moved elsewhere. ▮▮▮
