What are your opinions on this. have seen large teams led by senior equity partners with many junior partners who are completely dependent on the senior for getting work. Especially in firms like SAM where the salaried partners run the show and handle all the execution so they barely get the time to do BD. They also seem like too complacent and can't get themselves out of the senior partner's umbrella.

More than half or infact even more wealth is concentrated in the hands of the UC aka Savarnas. So in a society like India, nepotism and caste are deeply interlinked and inseparable.

Re Government jobs, I don't want to do a government job, nor do I have the aptitude for it. I work in a top T1 Team and they all think I'm UC, because of my UC aesthetics lol.

do you even know how much percent of the jobs in India is reserved? What is the size of the economy and in that what miniscule fraction is reserved? not that reservation is a poverty alleviation scheme. I doubt with your available thinking resources you'd know that. If you feel called out, it's because you enjoy the privileges of caste even now, while publically claiming or even not believing in it.

Till 1970s our family couldn't own the land we worked, we didn't have title. In 1945, the local landlord who is a UC, gave a feast to the village, people of my family had to eat from a hole in the ground.

I would like to reiterate what I mentioned earlier in another thread avoid getting hired directly by a junior / salaried partner (who bears your financial cost). When targets are not met, it is your job that will be at risk, not theirs. Especially in firms like SAM, where many salaried partners add little real value

Exactly why one should not join law firms. This is exactly what has been told in various threads and yet people who are in delusion want to do corporate law in law firms. Open your eyes, this is the reality oflaw firms..this is why it is always said litigation is far better. But these people here will not listen to the same and consider that trollish.

It is more common in firms like SCAM, where entire careers survive on borrowed glory. This partner at ▮▮▮ who just made ▮▮▮ this year ( yes, the one who sits on ▮▮▮ office ▮▮▮ floor) even after ▮▮▮ years in, does not have a single client of his own. Absolutely under his senior’s umbrella, and other matters he manages to get from other partners. Maybe instead of gossiping with associates, he should channelise these efforts to make connections with GCs etc so that atleast he can build some reputation of his own.

The above replies are obviously authored by a bunch of bygone equity partners who will now be busy fabricating timesheet entries for time spent on forums like this. The truth is that the client relationships (if they belong to the EPs in the first place rather than being institutional relationships or a firm) are sticking with the EPs simply because they make it their life's mission to deny SPs/RPs any client face time or credibility. The real workhorses are relegated to the side with little to no visibility or guidance on how to build their books (or the opportunity to do so for those who are smart enough to know the playbook). EPs need to be held accountable if their SPs are not building books and if Indian law firms were run professionally (rather than like lalas) then they would understand that incentivising this is actually in the best interests of the firm and its succession. Good luck to this profession which will forever be run into the ground by patriarchs from the stone age who care less about sound legal advice and more about their own egos and coffers and the EPs who sit on their rears year after year brown nosing them.

What a masterful reply. Yes, the real workhorses are the PAs/SAs/ASS. Why the relevance of the EP at all? The rank and file will be able to get clients, strategise, build relationships and trust, right? What an utterly blinkered and naiive boy you are. The cold hard reality is it does not matter to the EP who the juniors are on a matter - any EP worth his/her salt, will be able to handle the mandate regardless. That should give you some indication of where things stand.

Ok grown up boy, maybe you are worth your salt (which may describe your hair as much as it does your abilities), but a surprising number of EPs aren't. And if you think strategising, building relationships and trust can only be done by EPs then shed your woke mask because clients (yes then ones longing for an EP to woo their trust) are not going to be convinced by Linkedin posts about how you've embraced AI and are now competing for world domination.

Well it is hard because being an attorney and being a marketer of oneself are two different things.

1. No one taught you how to market yourself to get clients in law school.

2. Corruption is rampant - I know of at least 15 to 20 instances where the client-side asks for kickbacks to refer legal work and only allocates work to the highest bidder.

3. You have to be lucky or in the right circles (acquired by birth or marriage) to have a pre-existing relationship with, or get a warm introduction to someone that can actually be a high paying client.

4. The poor SPs that pitch to clients also get burned because those that they've pitched to expect infinite free consultations but never really want to pay. Those that do pay do so poorly and expect you to drop everything in your personal and professional life if the need arises. They will also shop a quote and switch attorneys for Rs. 5,000, sometimes less.

And millions of other reasons that I can't quite remember right now.

BOTTOM LINE: Why bother with all the aggravation? Just bill and get paid a fat sum to execute until the market is saturated with more of your kind. Hopefully when that time comes, you've built up a nice fat retirement fund and can finally spend time doing things that you love.

Let’s be real, senior partners love the “mentor” talk, but when it comes to actually helping someone rise, they’re out the door. They clutch their clients like a family heirloom, because that’s all they’ve got. The market’s tight, big-ticket clients are limited, and god forbid someone else shines. They’ll happily work juniors to death, brag about “team success,” and then ghost when it’s time to sponsor them for EP. Suddenly, it’s every man for himself.

Their logic - Nobody gave me a leg-up so if i can do it so can you. Truth is many benefitted from the 2015 split and got first mover’s advantage. This is not just true in corp but also in lit. Many EPs are glorified salaried partners simply servicing Shroffs’ clients. They will never allow their SPs to shine because it threatens their book or existence and relevance.
