During my time we brought up her record bfr Justice Talukdar. The man had many faults and some may even rightly ascribe the current decline to him as well. But on this ICC Chairperson issue, he promptly had her changed despite protestations and likely the matter went to EC as well.
Ironically that ex ICC head would often claim proximity to a celebrated Cal HC judge (among others in the judiciary) who is slated to be a CJI.
Not sure whether the clean up initiated then due to student complaints has made the campus safer now or the ICC is no longer hushing up or clocking out the complaints. Doubtful that behind-the-back atrocious commentary will ever change. And don't just blame menfolk. The females, including teachers, surpass the men with aplomb.
SAU just like Nalanda Univ were conceived with lofty visions and statements but completely belied the promises made. And these are directly under MEA. I wouldn't single out the NDA because UPA did little to stem the foundational rot.
I use this reference for two things. Firstly, whoever wants us to believe that a regime change here will do great things is deliberately playing mischief. Let's not be headless chickens here as well. SJA superbly did it to us previously.
Secondly, despite far better documentation of institutional lapses etc, SAU students continue to get bulldozed. This doesn't mean that we continue to be nincompoops and play to the tune of the SJA who play second fiddle to JalVayu etc; instead recognise that we should come better prepared and have the tenacity for a long fight.
And in our context, we don't need a student body that is in cahoots with the admin.
During his tenure he got grants for the IP centre, a chair endowment from the state govt, MPLAD funds for a building, UGC grants worth 5 cr and a very healthy surplus of Rs 16 cr plus despite massive capital expenditures on buildings, campus wifi, computer purchases, ACs, and rental for second campus. Ofc there is the NAAC rating too.
Where is the deficit and the financial wrongdoing?
Also unlike other campuses in this state, no SH, substance abuse, political violence etc in and around campus. Student elections get done without any hitch. And despite being a state university, everyone gets paid on central scale and that too timely including arrears.
SJA is going to get so creamed in the next EC. Actually it just gave NKC a big shopping list and we all know who will actually benefit from those "FC/EC approved" projects all done for student and academic welfare.
I have no love for NKC. Apparently the SC order was the big trigger for SJA to organise the much debated protests. By that logic the SJA should also do something about those mentioned in the Sinha Report, which actually shows us the evidence of wrongdoing by those named, such as LDG, Navendu etc and also we can track those such as SAK, PIB who allowed the wrongdoers to get away without a scratch. LDG was also involved in slapgate. By SC logic shouldn't she and others mention the Sinha Report and Slapgate inquiries in their CVs? VPa should also similarly mention about the various inquiries against her in the CV as well. Then again NKC cleverly buried all inquiries and SJA did nothing.
Why is the SJA being soft on him? Exactly what was this man doing at IIM-C? Isn't it strange that someone would leave that and come here.
Best that we concentrate on cleaning our affairs starting with SJA and its loud silence on so many issues as also the inability of the GB to do anything abt it. If we remain doormats, we will get trampled. Also focus on what is actually done and not optics and fancy words. SJA should not be allowed to hoodwink us again.
Planned protests in Nov, ultimatum, laundry list of feckless demands and word salad shouldn't stop us from asking SJA what it intends to do with the upcoming EC and thereafter because this VC will hang on till the very end, which precedent shows is extendable
Also the search committee met again . At Hyatt. Again. The shortlist will get placed in the EC for onward transmission to CJI. But it is likely that the CJI designate will be the one taking the decision when he takes over in Nov. Maybe a rabbit trick may happen then.
EC is expected soon. Is the SJA actually prepared to make good on its ill thought ultimatum? NKC will be dealing in papers showing EC/FC approvals etc. That cannot be countered by hearsay, speculations etc.
The issue actually is about SJA and its recent history of complicity after NKC settled in. After the GC debacle and hilarious flops with gherao etc, will the SJA now produce the incriminating paperwork or more importantly, did it even have it while making the accusations. Even if those accusations were true and SJA now has the papers, do they actually have the bite or just feckless slanders?
SJA brass have to come clean or get cleaned out. SJA is the weak link.
By Jan-Feb, we will get to know which way the wind will be blowing at NUJS. Of course, some will simply switch affiliations.
But it is also a great way to dish out a juicy tender to WEBEL, which just like the PWD is merely a front for ... Has always been so here and in many other states as well.
Isn't it strange that despite all the hoopla ever since this SH issue came up or actually from the time NKC took over, all inquiries have been stymied?
VPa had ridiculed the then SJA for raising the issue that univ lacked GST registration and the distance education courses lacking UGC approval had service tax and later GST implications. They even produced an internal document as proof. Later NKC was forced to get the GST registration done.
More recently as with municipal corporation property tax notice, the univ was initially sent a Rs 5 lac or so service tax demand for pre GST violations. Then the univ went to have the same withdrawn and ended up paying Rs 11 lac+.
Why is NKC do reluctant to conduct or allow inquiries and why does the SJA quietly connive with him on this issue as well?
No real action against the Cal U law dean who did nothing bfr and after the monstrous acts got exposed this time. Instead he even tried to detail the inquiry. Sure he was removed from the inquiry but what else? What about his role in dodgy entrance tests and admissions and the BCI affiliation delay? And that man has the gall to personally come to NUJS and hand in application for the VC position. It takes a certain amount of confidence born of tacit political backing to do all this.
NKC stays on or goes, it's gloomy days for NUJS. Either we will get someone like NKC or worse or some messianic fellow who will do the same damage under the cover of discipline, quality and similar chicanery.
Apart from BBA, another track on BA LLB with focus on use of AI for court management and litigation is also in the offing. This is likely the Adjudication track that some judges in the EC and elsewhere want.
As long some starlings are studying here no FC, EC will do anything meaningful to clean up.
Ofc nothing happens without the day so of VC. The more interesting point is what did NKC do after EC initiated an inquiry? Likely it never got done and is used as leverage by NKC.
May explain why the man is (in)famous for street protests (self claimed) but ever absent from protests at NUJS or speaking truth to power (despite tall claims in classrooms and elsewhere).
Some gifted Nobel laureates are also known for these qualities.
So PIB tried to get EC approval but got shot down. He got an extension though. Repeat with NKC. But what I don't understand is the need for EC approval. The EC was not even consulted when the NUJS Act was amended by the state govt for domicile quota and a disguised attempt to take NUJS out of CLAT. The then SJA understood it couldn't fight the domicile quota, which had tacit support from HC as well. Hence it chipped away on technicalities and stalled the move as long it could and ultimately stymied the CLATexit.
This means that if the govt is keen it can easily get the Act amended and set up campuses in Asansol, Siliguri and other sites in Bengal. They could all operate on the ISI model or MNLU model or NIFT model etc.
Why then is the govt playing coy and can the SJA realistically and legally cancel moves to open "study centres" elsewhere with new courses such as BBA LLB (Hons)?
If the saffron tagline of "party with a difference" were actually true then kindly explain the following. I am not giving a clean chit to their so called political rivals.
1. In the last few years 25 rival politicians crossed over and 23 high profile corruption investigations and prosecutions went poof. Just check Maharashtra, Assam and ofc Bengal where Sarada, Rose Valley, Narada and the list goes on. To wail that the state govt is hobbling the venerable (vulnerable) CBI, ED etc is farcical.
2. Leave aside an objective, impartial investigation. How did saffron squander both investigation and prosecution of RG Kar case?
3. A former KP Commissioner and now DGP came under spotlight because of his unusual involvement in Sarada case and it caused a unique brawl with CBI involving the CM. But what has the MHA done till now? Why was the prosecution allowed to falter so openly?
I could just go on. Bottomline, all parties in power follow or exceed their predecessors in corrupt practices and organising the players. It will be no different for NUJS whether regime change happens or not.
However if the students ( just like voters) refuse to be sheep then things may turn out differently. It almost did when PIB got evicted.
It will be an interesting litmus test for both the SJA and the univ. Maybe the GB should draft the RTIs and then get the SJA to pursue it. If the SJA fails then heads must roll.
Si successive VCs kept claiming this and the campus supervisor did zilch when he was sent annually to the municipal corporation to sort out the matter. Recently the univ received a demand notice of over a crore including accrued interest and penalty charges on property taxes that remain unpaid. The univ has already paid Rs 18 lacs of the Rs 25 lacs initially demanded. But when more papers were sought from the univ who again raised the claim of exemption, the univ was slapped with Rs 1 cr plus demand.
NKC apparently said that univ is floating on money so it doesn't matter. Apparently the swelling student fees, esp the NRI sponsored ones has created a vast surplus. Rs 16 cr have to be spent by March 2029 to retain IT exempt status. And then FDs worth 40 crores will get broken so that PWD can get more contracts and goodness knows where that trail ends.
All in all, NKC is staying. The teach who misled you will finally get their deals worked out. And the sheep, lamb and headless chickens will get eaten for brekkie, lunch and dinner. Kapish. Happy Christmas in advance.
The deep fishes wear only one jersey - opportunism. And their skillsets are valuable to whoever is in power. That's why a a certain teach who had scooted during PIB eviction and whose services were terminated by the EC was given a red carpet welcome by NKC. And the biggest support came from two judges, one each from SC and HC who had joined the EC. Interestingly, the state was split. The ever interested KD wanted the teach in but the LM remained opposed but relented when higher command nudged a reversal.
The "incorruptible" saffron knows all this. Has always known about this teach. But the saffron will actually do nothing and if opportunity comes, it will even appoint him as VC. That deal has already been inked.
Btw, do you really think that Green could have survived and thrived this long without saffron support. Even now. And RGK tell us how all the parties despite televised differences; came together to avoid a Bang/Nepal from happening. Because that may not have stopped at just regime change but a far deeper uprooting of politics and politicians.
Ofc all these trips had EC/FC stamps after they were undertaken. As they say it is better to seek forgiveness than permission. โฎโฎโฎ โฎโฎโฎ.
You know what happened. But can you prove it? That's the challenge NKC has thrown to his detractors.
The more interesting bit is supposed collaborative research with various institutions. Apparently this list helped with NAAC. If this is collaborative then how much did the each of these collaborating institutions put in? Apparently NKC put in Rs 2.6 cr because CLAT grants require money to be spent on research among other things. But was the FC and EC approval taken because some acolytes were awarded multiple times and between Rs 10-20 lacs per grant. Is NUJS paying for sunk costs while NKC & Co gets rewarded with cream later when somebody goes for share market. This much law is sikho.
Oct 16 is drawing near. Is SJA better prepared or bad mein dekha jayega after consulting jalvayu?
For now the SJA cabal should be thrown out and it should get restructured in a way that another cabal doesn't get incentivised to sabotage studen interests. And every dime that students give or the univ receives should get tracked in real time. But for all this and more a vigilant GB needs to be present and sustained.
Pipe dreams I guess. Hence smooth sailing for NKC and his partners in crime at SJA.
The fiery princeling later tried to stain the SJA with political colours offering both SFI and ABVP contacts (the latter courtesy his then guru who is a recently promoted Prof). SJA saw through both these chameleons and their charlatans faculty and staff allies and decided to maintain distance. This was galling for the guru and his then good friend who were not only faculty advisors of SJA but also actually believed that their alum status meant a free ride on students. Anyway SJA acted independently and they got a earful from the Four Horsemen of PIB who now swirl around NKC.
The fiery princeling saw the writing on the wall as did some others as well who scooted as soon their rides got organised. But some stayed on and continue playing double or triple agents for the powers that be while misleading students.
๐คซ๐คญ
Bottom line: Donโt support agendas of teachers. Just fight for the institutionโs prestige and better facilities for students.
Maybe he is biding time to deliver the KOs to SJA and a section of the faculty on Oct 16. Once the EC let's him continue, which looks highly likely, the complicit SJA will do little. It lost the plot way back and since then never bothered to get its own house in order.
Students are sheep anyway. Give them a new variety of grass, and they will chomp away. Both SJA and NKC know this.
And it really doesn't matter which place is apparently cleaner or more hollowed out than us. Our fees and engagement in this univ demands a certain min standard. Anything better is always welcome and desirable. But the min needs to be there, sustained and raised. That has been sliding since PIB took over and yes, students must also share the blame.
Getting so called strict or disciplinarian teachers aren't silver bullets. Certainly we can start with stemming the rot at the top and the swirling cabal of maggots. And there isn't inherently virtuous in being NLU or foreign educated. Atrociously illiberal things can be perpetuated through the liberal.
Also if I can have you in the present, can you please explain why there is no paperwork supporting the SJA claim of Rs 7cr deficit allegedly caused by the financial mismanagement of NKC?
Equally important why was no inquiry conducted or action taken against the teach who almost caused the univ to get blacklisted by the NCGC? And what about other EC inquiries against her?
Kindly take your poorly disguised political spiel elsewhere. The apolitical student association has had a good run this far at NUJS. Yes, we should all throw out the current lot at SJA for misleading us. And now if this 16 cr surplus instead of a 7cr deficit as claimed by SJA without docu evidence is true, then this SJA should be disbanded.
The current batch of students owed over Rs 1.3 crores in pending hostel or mess dues. NKC has offered to raise the scholarship corpus while also installing AC systems in both the hostels for nearly Rs 4 crores. The PWD has already been awarded more than Rs 6 crores of contracts apart from the vertical extension of the academic block which will get extra set of elevators for an extra Rs 50 lacs. Reimbursement of moot court registration monies etc. Higher outlay for SJA and diluted scrutiny of advances made etc. Registrar will be the nodal point for most matters of SJA. Btw, the so called Rs 7 cr deficit is all fiction. The univ is floating on at least 16 crores of surplus and there is time more in reserves. All this will get highlighted in the EC on Oct 16.
SJA knows this. Hence to keep the sheep (that's us) grazing it issued hollowed ultimatum. But when the time comes, it would claim that student interests were upheld in its "strenuous negotiations" with NKC and therefore no more NKC eviction. Also if the EC wants NKC to stay on till Dec 31 or another extension thereafter what can the SJA do?
Now that you know what spiel is coming, choose wisely.
If you know of sticky stuff, kindly disclose.
Two things must change. The SJA and far reaching changes in WBNUJS Act. The latter is structured to be VC centric while students get treated like lambs ready for.....
India (NKC): A guy fakes his CV but becomes the leader of the equivalent (in law terms, for India) of an ivy league university, decreasing the university's relevancy on the global stage from a status of "rising star with potential to give the best in class a hard time" to "local college that can be dismissed out of hand".
Western style: Minouche Shafik, a person who, despite lots of privilege, has many genuine accomplishments to her name, becomes VC of LSE (after a stint as a Deputy Governor of the British central bank, the Bank of England). Makes a right little mess of handling teachers' strikes at LSE and fails upwards (or perhaps sideways? difficult to say) to Columbia, where she messes up handling of protests in such a way as to make both the pro-Israel and anti-Israel camps angry.
I rest my case.
barring SKD and Sinha the rest of the outsiders are are people who are hardly known.
may be the deteriorating academic standards are a product of the quality of insiders the place has.
Merit and scholarship has taken a back seat at NUJS ,the incumbent Vc has managed to bring it to the levels of a Hazra Law College of the 80-90s or Law Department of Burdawan University or a KIIT Law school or even perhaps a Hoogly Mohsin College.
From the hey days of Menon, Chimni and Singh to this. Its really regrettable.IIM Calcutta has never got influenced or pressured by the local State Govt or any other entities.NLUs should start looking at how IITs or IIMs are run and accordingly choose a managing model where there will be a better interface between industry and academic sans politics and people who have political agendas.
Recently, the authorities had chargesheeted the two teachers ? Nirmal Kanti Chakraborty and S.S. Chatterjee.
?I have not yet received any chargesheet. Naturally, I will not say anything about the so-called charges,? Chakraborty told Metro on Tuesday.
The inquiry committee also found that Chakraborty, in securing a job at the university, had given false statements regarding his stint at Hooghly Mohsin College.
A member of the Syndicate said Chakraborty had stated in his application that he had been a full-time teacher at the college. ?But inquiry revealed his statement to be absolutely false. His appointment was ad hoc and he was not a permanent teacher there.?
Chakraborty was appointed in the university?s law department in 1997. Next year, he was promoted to the post of reader and in 2003, he became the head of the department.
The university?s chargesheet against Chakraborty asked him to explain why he had misled the authorities by making false statements regarding his previous employment.

Well, well, wellโฆ ๐
So how was he appointed VC in the first place?
