A certain teacher at NUJS had collapsed in a epileptic fit. Due to stigma surrounding epilepsy no one but a senior teacher who was then the Registrar too knew about her history of epilepsy. The teacher had fallen face first and broke her tooth that pierced the lips and caused fracture to her nose as well. She bled profusely. Students rushed her to a well equipped hospital some distance away. Nearby hospitals hadn't come up then or lacked facilities. This was early days in Salt Lake. No one from admin even accompanied this teacher and her students. The teacher of course had no clue. Knocked unconscious. When the some of the students came back to plead the admin, esp the Registrar to at least intervene with insurance paperwork and further payments (students paid the initial amount with whatever they could manage then) the Registrar thundered, threatened and had the teacher sent to an infamous minimally equipped govt hospital in Salt Lake because the teacher did not have medical insurance. A certain student had an elder bro studying medicine and he used contacts to ensure the basics. Throughout her stay no one but students visited her during recovery. On returning to campus, she thanked students and resigned quietly.

Btw, this was the so called golden days of a great Padma, NRM Menon who was very much on campus and fully aware. Students had approached him and later even complained against the Registrar, his pet. He glared and boomed that students should only be seen in classes and hostel rooms. End of story. Also the planned health centre was later leased out to a bank, which continues to pay a measly rental despite holding crores of NUJS money. Here too the great Padma forced the bank on NUJS despite offers from SBI etc only because of a parochial reason. The same reason NLS also got the same bank on its campus.

I heard this from a former Noojie and could only mumble back that things remain the same even now. Thankfully we now have good hospitals nearby but rest is between God and that unfortunate person.

▮▮▮. The hospitals that he was taken to admitted that had he gotten timely medical intervention, he would've lived. ▮▮▮ We cry about admin issues because people like you try to normalise bad ones. We will cry because we don't want to show for one second that we are passively submitting to or accepting their incompetence.

I was an LLM candidate in NALSAR in last batch. Dogs had created mayhem in the campus and one such dog bit me without any provocation. I rushed to the healthcare, I was just told to wash the wound in casual manner (the protocol says was it with running water and soap continuously for at least 10-15 minutes- which I was not informed by the nurse and I only came to know about it later on when I out of anxiety researched about Rabies on internet). So, my initial first aid was not done nicely. Then when I asked for vaccination first nurse tried to persuade me to not take vaccination, as the wound is not serious. I was reluctant that I will get myself vaccinated, then she said come tomorrow, we don't have doctor now, he only will permit vaccination in the morning. I went to see the Doctor the next morning, initially he also said that no need of vaccine. But, later agreed to vaccinate me. He started my vaccination and gave me a chart, I was asked to report in the night of day 3, to take second dose without a miss. To my surprise when I reached at the stated time nurse again refused to vaccinate me as there was no doctor. I tried my best to explain her that dates can't be missed in rabies vaccination, but she kept saying, one day delay is not much! I showed her WHO guidelines, but she was reluctant. So, I decided to go to city to get myself vaccinates. I called one of my batchmate, who is from Hyderabad and has a car at campus to help me. He said that first let him talk with the nurse, then only decide about the next step. With his better communication in Telugu and better persuasive quality, he was successful in making the nurse and doctor (on phone) agree to give me vaccine after I write an application that, if something happens I have sole responsibility. Then again I had to go on 7th day to take vaccine. On this day there was a lady doctor on duty. There were 2 more people in the PHC other than me who had to take rabies vaccine. She said I won't give you vaccine, you people deliberately get bitten by dog because vaccine is free here. We will make new rule that only first dose will be available here, other doses you will have to get from outside. She wasn't ready to give us vaccine. When I saod okay in that case I am going to meet Registrar and VC did she agree to give us vaccine, but her behaviour towards us was such that she thinks us to be criminals. Somehow, they completed my vaccination on time with much more tantrums. Night duty Doctor doesn't see patients after 10, and usually there are only nurses in the PHC if you go at the night.

Anytime such a tragedy happens, students post on LI with their personal agendas trying to target the admin. Please stop this. Yes, what happened is very sad, but there are thousands of premature deaths that happened in the world. People have various undiagnosed and congenital conditions.

Nothing much will happen since the parents apparently do not suspect foul play. Remember how the NLUJ student "suicide" was dealt by the courts and the investigating agencies? It was processed to become a cold case. Such is the fate of most cases. Inquiry often isn't about finding the "truth". It is mostly a risk management thing for the powers that be even when no malice is involved.
