The rejection hit me like a wave. I was shocked, because throughout my internships, and even during and after my presentation, the feedback I received was always positive. And yet, for reasons I still don’t understand, I was turned away.
How could they reject me after listening to my answer to their HR questions when I received the PPO recommendation for my work after 3 months of internship and two 55-60 minutes each presentation? What did they see in me in those 11 minutes that the partners who recommended me, for my work, didn't see in 3 months? What?
PS Please don’t tell me I “dodged a bullet.” That doesn’t ease the pain, betrayal and disappointment that I'm feeling currently. I wanted this. I envisioned myself being part of it. Instead, I’m left with nothing but restless questions.
"What went wrong? Where did I falter? What could I have done differently?"
Right now, I just feel heartbroken, disappointed, dejected, and searching for answers that may never come. If you could answer my questions, it would be nice.
Could you please shed some light on which firms don’t hire candidates who don’t have a background from reputed colleges or strong academic records? Also, what paths do such candidates take to overcome these challenges and succeed?

These offers will come and go, what matters is your perseverance and how you deal with these situations.
There are many ways to get to T1s, I'm sure you'll find yours.
On a different note, as some have pointed out already, CAM is particularly fixated on batch ranks, so not being among the Top 5/10 ranks of your college is kind of a deal-breaker for them, even with stellar internship performance and presentation reviews.
Additionally, it may help to reach out to your original reporting partner/team member (who gave you the PPO recommendation) and try to explain the present situation to them and ask if they could look into it or put in a word for you with HR. It's definitely a long shot, but one worth taking nonetheless.

2024 batch - no slump - around 100 freshers (which is usual)
usual expectation is having 50-60 percent retention at the end of year 1 and 15-20 percent by end of year 2. But this expectation works out when the offers in the first place are made to top 10-15 rankers of a batch in top few NLUs. these kids ultimately have the risk taking ability, merit and qualifications for other things (LLM, Litigation, alternate careers). Not that other kids are not good, they just need to stay a little longer to shed the disadvantage that their lower rank/university puts them at in the eyes of those assessing.
Also biggest reason is an anticipation of market slowdown - I dont think (those familiar with numbers may elaborate since LI does not do the scoreboard anymore) it is happening but everybody is anticipating
So, according to your galaxy-brain logic, these people were so shy that they first recommended an assessment, then a PPO… because they were too polite to just say ‘nah, you’re not good enough’? 😂
Come on, Troll. That’s the best you’ve got?!
1. The team was actually interviewing ~4-10 interns they liked over the year but only intended to make 1-2 offers.
2. The intern got positive recommendations from all the associates but the interviewing partner was not satisfied with the answer to a technical question.
3. The intern was well liked by the associates, interviewing partners, but some senior partner having influence over the recruiting process preferred that the fresher be in top 20% of their batch, or preferred students from some college.
4. The team decided they didn't need as many first years joining due to external factors (state of economy, attrition in the team, partners split or quit the firm, teams got restructured) so they ended the process.
If you really loved that team, you can always add some members on LinkedIn, or email a few people who gave you work letting them know that you didnt make it through the interview but would like to be considered for an opportunity in the future. T1 firms experience 50-60% attrition within the first 2 years anyway lol.
