Read up Agatha Christie's book, 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd'. If the novel is to be taken as a reliable indicator of social conditions in post-war (World War I) Britain, middle class to upper middle class English ladies living in the countryside considered Mahjong to be a favourite passtime then!
That is why the tweet of an even more modern, much less desirable (as a human being) teller of inconvenient truths springs to mind: Dominic Cummings (this is quoted in Simon Kuper's book, 'Chums: How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK'). Cummings, who was the chief advisor to the PM during the COVID-19 pandemic, says that if you considered the likes of Boris Johnson or Jacob Rease-Mogg (both Eton and Oxford men from wealthy families with huge connects) as 'posh', then the great unwashed really has no idea of what 'posh' truly means.
Play all the Mahjong you like. Pour loads of money into learning it, if you want. I really don't care about that, either. I really don't care. But don't make yourself rediculous by pretending this is a new thing - a new fad or fancy. Any person who does this is very foolish, and from the article, it seems as though at least some of those interviewed are not falling into this trap, which is good. We are already better than our British counterparts in that, where one of their most established private members' clubs, the Garrick, only began admitting women after May 2024, we have considered women to be part and parcel of our social circles in ours for much longer. Let's continue in that tradition of being forward-looking and not make exhibitions of ourselves, please.
