I am son of a retired High Court Judge, but I never want anyone to think that my achievements in life are result of me solely being connected to a powerful person. That is why I made a promise to myself, that I will leave my Parent HC and practice in the Delhi High Court. I received an offer letter from a recently opened Law Firm however, they have not disclosed their salary to me.

Every time I get into a discussion about this with my family, I do not have any answers to their practical and much warranted questions like - How would you manage in a city like Delhi and all by yourself? Or whether you would be able to make it on the whatever little salary they would offer?

I am afraid that if I join any place on the basis of their recommendation, I would be looked down upon and since I am just a beginner, I know I don’t know many things which people might expect me to know.

So should I just choose a chamber on the basis of the recommendations given by my father or am I being foolish by opting to choose to go on my own way, and working for a small law firm?

I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to make a career for yourself on your own. From what I understand, the only unclear variable is the salary which you will get at this Delhi law firm. With regards to the questions which your family ask you, it is not that difficult to understand the cost of living in Delhi. Have you looked at potential places to stay and their rent? It should be fairly simple to draw a rough estimate of what your monthly expenditure will look like. In any case, I would assume that your family is quite well off due to which money should not be a problem (assuming you are not averse to taking financial help from your parents).

Stop the unnecessary idealism. Make use of your privilege. Do good with it for society if you have qualms. But if not you, someone else using their privilege will get ahead. And then what they do with that privilege - self-gain or societal value - is not in your hands. So use the privilege. And then do good.
