Make a damn affirmative statement about what you’re seeing in our universities or let someone who can do.

The easiest thing in the world to do when someone points to a problem is to argue the edge exception case and say “ ah but what you say is not always happening”. It adds nothing to any conversation at all.

I didn’t say anything about NLU. Students going to state universities - government universities that make you kill everything you eat. Will be hard workers and hustlers- when they have to kill to eat. There’s a few of those students who might not be ambitious and might have connections so they typically put in less effort but over all that’s a verrrrry different demographic to Jgls.

In any case the trouble with state universities is that they have hungry students but the universities aren’t run properly enough to discipline guide and educate these students so they mostly don’t know as much about opportunities that are out there.

No one who is joining nalsar or nls is allowed to persist with the notion that they are owed anything by the world. Most of them are not geniuses , not are they very hardworking. But one of the first things your seniors and college profs and everyone else tells you in those places is - you better get ready to work because no one can promise you anything . You might have been big shot in school but everyone starts at zero in law school. That thing is beaten into you. And you internalise it. And it’s true for most of them- they don’t have parents promising them a job even if they don’t work. They’re just incentivised to work harder than your average Jgls student.

Obviously not every Jgls student is a pampered brat. What an idiotic thing to say- the point is trends, averages. Most of them just have no need to be hungry or to achieve- they’ve been promised the world and they will be given it whether or not they earn it. And they absolutely make life terrible for faculty and the handful of students who are motivated. What teenager who is put in that situation would behave differently?

Obviously not everything goes according to plan when you parent. But the point is to parent regardless. My mom deliberately made my brother live in a free hostel for destitute boys during his undergrad. She could have afforded fancy on campus hostel where he would have richer friends. She deliberately went the other way because she wanted her son to learn what it means to be hungry and to need to succeed- that and she saved the money for my education. And that worked for him. He’s doing very well now. Obviously at the time it caused some friction because he wanted to have the best and she felt the need to give her child the best too- but she realised at the time that more important than giving her son everything he wanted was to teach him values and keep him on the straight and narrow.

Isn’t it so curious that when we get in to law school it’s all merit and when our children fail you’ll say it’s all luck ? What a terrible way to delegitimise the achievements of other peoples children. Who in many cases did not grow up with lawyer parents and go to best schools but simply crammed and studied and scored better points. Of course you think all the kids you know deserved to go to nls. Why anyone should take your word for it is beyond me.

It’s not the worst thing in the world for parents to sometimes admit they’re children aren’t the best at everything. That’s got more to do with your ego than it has to do with the best for your kids. Your kid probably won’t be Sachin Tendulkar or Beethoven and they probably won’t be Alan dershowitz either. What they definitely have equal opportunity to be is someone who is grounded, who knows who they are, who is a pleasure to work with both because of behaviour and work ethic. You deny them those things when you don’t tell them the truth.

I have never been to JGLS. I went to a sarkari NLU and worked at 2 top NLUs. You know where I found the kids to be most dedicated- a state university in Kerala. Not an NLU.

Merely because someone does not get into an NLU, it does not give anyone rights to be judged as spoilt brats.

Good luck buddy.. I hope things work out the way you plan, but it's also good to remember that not everything is in your control. Just like everyone who gets into NLS or NALSAR isn't a genius with great work ethic, everyone who goes to Jindal isn't a brat whose parents pampered them. I'm guessing you either don't have kids yet or have very young kids, because if you had been through the college admission grind with teenagers, you would know that there is also a very strong element of luck. (btw, my kid is at a tier-1 NLU so I hold no brief for Jindal. Things worked out for her but I saw so many of her equally deserving friends just narrowly fail to make the cut).

Your post title could have been far more hard-hitting: "LI the forum is sad and, frankly, cringe, and has been so for a while" (which it is and has been for a long time). As somebody has pointed out, both you and the main person opposing your argument lack nuance. And yes, both of you guys contribute to the state of affairs described in the suggested modification to the headline I put forward.

I’m sorry. Total bullshit. Any parent who can afford to front 60 lakhs a year for their kids schooling is not going to abandon them after 5 years. They may say so now and then to look like good parents but they aren’t going to follow through.

A kid in that situation might consider himself less fortunate than someone who goes abroad for their BA. But trust it’s just a matter of degree and not one of kind. You either are hungry or you’re not. Nobody is a son of bezos but that doesn’t mean the sons of other billionaires are somehow disadvantaged.

Yes. Clat is competitive. The world is competitive. It was competitive even at the start where you competed for fewer seats against 60k people. But it’s also easy if one just studies. So I don’t know, maybe your parents should have just taught you to study.

It is absolutely parental thing to want the best outcomes for your kid. But it is stupid and greedy and only a wealthy person thing to assume you can buy the best outcomes for your kid. What are you to do ? Parent your child. Teach them the value of hard work and humility so they don’t say ignorant crap like OP and get read for filth. Do you even really know your kids ? If there’s one thing I learnt hanging around Jindal students it’s that their parents have no idea what is going on with them. They’re not parents as much as they are “financiers”. Investors who have to be shielded from the day to day and presented with a picture that is assuring - and the university and the students both collaborate in this deception. It would never have passed muster with most middle class parents who know their kids and know when something is off. Stop indulging every whim and fancy and let your kids be held accountable for their mistakes, let them learn, and let them grow up.teach them how to be good members of their community.

And do this ideally before they become the worlds problem. Before they come in to universities and bring all these substance abuse and behavioural problems with them, maybe figure out what’s going on with your kid and parent them.

Teach them what it means to have a work ethic and to be respectful of others before they end up at a workplace where they are now someone else’s problem.

They’re not born into being demons or whatever, but the sheer lack of raising- I mean they have everything they could ever want except actual parents who will bite the bullet and do the hard stuff. In that respect they’re pretty much neglected.

You raise decent people - they won’t get cursed out by the people around them. Even if they do go to private schools.

Of course you don’t see the value of academic rigor and knowing things muffin! You’ve never been assessed on what you can do and what you know! But do not turn around and then claim for yourself any part of “merit” . Go to your party school, drown your twenties in a bottle, marry someone hot but equally boring and live your silly little life. But the second you get deluded enough to chide others to work harder- someone’s gonna have to tell you the truth.

Right. I never disputed that it was children of NLU grads. But just like I am not my parents, you are not yours either. Being the son of someone who went to nls is not really an accomplishment. What is difficult to understand about that ? Yes these people work really hard , earn a lot of money , give their kids whatever they want , and fail to adequately parent.

I don't agree with the OP's comments - and I do agree with yours. There is a class issue at hand, and it definitely needs to be looked into. However, both scenarios lack nuance. OP is the "if you work hard you make it" scenario, which does not take into account societal barriers and considerations, but you also assume that there are HNI's and then poor people and basically nobody in between.

There seems to be a fundamental disconnect on the number of kids who are "rich" in Jindal, and how "rich" they are. For law batches of 1000ish (only for the 5-year LLB) kids per FY, it is just not possible that every kid has family / connects who are very high up in the legal profession or is some HNI / Promoters kid. No doubt, they have parents who can afford the crazy fees, however, they are individuals who are employees (and not at CXO levels), without the connects to get their child a solid job, or the money to support that kid forever (if they flunked out of that stupid job). They are parents who are willing to put in that money with that understanding (and consequent pressure on the child) that they are only supported until this stage and must now make their own way forward. This growing class may not have to support their family or send money home, but they also know that they have no inheritance or family business to fall back on.

I would think that it is not IB kids who would even go to a Jindal since most IB kids go abroad (that is, they're generally from a class even higher than those who send their kids to Jindal). There is a significant difference between these groups too. 5 years in Jindal will net net with all living expenses be approx. 60L. 4 years in the US with living expenses would be double, and almost close to 2Cr-ish. These are significantly different numbers.

Alos - look at the CLAT applicant and seat numbers. In 2015, approx. 40,000 people gave the exam for approx. 3000 (UG+PG) seats. In 2025 approx. 80,000 people gave the exam for approx. 4000 (UG+PG) seats. Of these 4000 seats, less than a 1000 are in the top 6-7 NLU's (which offer both a great education and job security), with the remaining 3000 seats in lower NLU's, which are actual government colleges with far from the best professors, or recruitment numbers. There is no proportionate seat increase, or quality control in any expansion - (ofc this is what happens in a capitalistic society and places like Jindal prey on these families)

Where is a growing upper - lower class supposed to send their kids if those are the options? Is it not a parental thing to want the best for your kid? Quite frankly, what are these parents supposed to do? What is your solution?

Nothing makes these kids virtuous, or hardworking or in any way special. They should receive no applause or merit for going to Jindal - they did nothing to earn that. It also does not make these kids demons, the scrouge of society, or the pole bearers of modern Indian capitalism (which is how you seem to think they are) for having to go to a private law school.

All of this is nonsense. Merely because someone has cleared a stupid exam doesn't mean they are superior to people who have. NLS is on the other end of the spectrum where there is no end of a academic rigour and yet, all that rigour leads to lesser placements than Nalsar.

Recently, I met an individual in Bengaluru who was educated in Pondicherry in a school without a curriculam or fixed subjects. Every learning outcome was taught through an activity, they had sports every day of the week. He was earning well, working as a consultant in IT.

Whatever it is you’re learning at your IB school- it still doesn’t help you crack a silly little exam called clat. Really it should be left hands play for folks who had that much advantage. You don’t crack clat- you go to Jindal. You know and I know and the world knows the rigor is not there. You pay ten lakhs a year you cannot buy an education but they will give you a degree. So you barely have skills or knowledge and you’re never hungry enough because everything in life has just been handed to you. So you stretch your arms out again for foreign llm. No one minds but you don’t study there either - you just waste the seat partying your face off and taking courses in bullshit. But it’s not like you got into a very selective program anyway- who cares if you spent a year at qmul or whatever. Will you get a job after that ? Considering you haven’t invested academically and a phd is not forthcoming if you don’t shell out more money ? You can try- come back and work at a Lala shop or at dads firm or heck go back and teach at Jindal cause what is it you’re supposed to do anyway ? And you soon find the rigours of work aren’t for you. So you’ll try and pass off the work of your juniors and your colleagues as your own. And dad will promote you when he has the chance.

And you have the GD audacity to sit there and tell us to work hard when you don’t even know what it is to work for anything at all. And you have the audacity to portray your consumption choices as matters of merit or effort. You cannot buy virtue.

This doesn’t apply to all rich kids. Some are parented well enough that they work hard and clearly know their stuff and zero people have a problem with those guys.

Yes, some people go to IB schools.

Then they go to Jindal.

Then they go to London or New York for an LLM.

Then they apply to AZB, JSA etc through a contact and get accepted.

Then they may well find the work too straining/tedious and join a think tank or invest in startups, living comfortably off family wealth. ….

And so? Deal with it. We are not North Korea.

Also, I hope you know that when middle-class NLU grads become HNIs, their kids end up doing the same.
