The Supreme Court's sweeping order to remove all stray dogs from Delhi and the adjoining National Capital Region (NCR) has drawn a response from animal rights groups, with PETA warning that large-scale displacement is both "unscientific" and ineffective.

The top court today directed the Delhi government and civic bodies in Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad to begin immediate removal of stray dogs from all localities and house them in shelters, saying the animals must not be returned to the streets.

PETA India's Senior Director of Veterinary Affairs, Dr Mini Aravindan, issued a statement questioning the effectiveness of mass removal.

"Communities think of neighbourhood dogs as family, and the displacement and jailing of dogs is not scientific and has NEVER worked. Per a population survey conducted in 2022-23, Delhi has around 10 lakh community dogs, with less than half sterilised. Forced removal of some 10 lakh community dogs from Delhi's streets will cause uproar in communities that care deeply for them and chaos and suffering for the dogs on a large scale. It will also ultimately do nothing to curb the dog population, reduce rabies or prevent dog bite incidents," the statement read.

Shame on you and all the ▮▮▮ ▮▮▮ upvoting you. If you had the minimum knowledge, you would know that all sorts of horrible and cruel methods are used to remove dogs from roads. They are videos of it, which are really shocking. They use metal clamps around their mouth. It was only inevitable that the ▮▮▮ mentality of the current regime was transferred from humans to dogs.

Have seen both. But the guy saying about watching videos of dogs doesn't seem to have seen both. And why is it being termed as culling, when the order is to put them in shelters? The challenge in implementing your suggestion is that the strays don't exactly put a label on them that I'll go and attack human.

Everyone who's outraging here basis social media, please go and read the actual order of the Court. Gives very specific directions to ensure wellbeing of dogs. The order was essentially to ensure that Government machinery comes in action but the arm chair activists without even reading it started outraging. Let me ask a question - the first day hearing cost in the SC would have exceeded 2 cr with the senior lineup who appeared. What stopped all these organisation's for all these years to actually make the shelters by spending this money. We wouldn't have been here. And before making a song and dance about vaccination and sterilization, go ahead and see the studies which say that sterilized strays become even more aggressive.

And yeah, try all this stray care while you actually have a stray or a pack of strays attacking a loved one or god forbid, a child. At that time, would love to see you lovingly pat the strays and offer whatever you offer to them.

Indeed. In fact, why not start guide dog schools in India, like they have in Canada, the U.S., Britain and Australia? You are putting the dogs to good use. Teach them to be guides and mobility aids to blind and partially sighted people. Do these good things instead of unnecessarily outraging.

If you like any animal. Keep them in your house, feed them, care for them, treat them well, get proper registration, get proper vaccination. However don't do a half ass job of just feeding them on the road (a public place). If you want to take care of them, IN YOUR OWN PRIVATE PLACE.

Rather than dogs, we need to curb the human population first. India’s population will hit 1.7 billion in our lifetime. Apart from leading to severe water scarcity and environmental damage, the the majority of such people wil be uneducated, with zero sense of hygiene, civic sense and respect for women.

Since human culling would be considered immoral and unconstitutional, the government should at least stop subsidies and deny jobs to people with more than two children (preferably one child).

We're so for animal rights here in NALSAR that one can raise 20k for a dog's treatment in two days but the same kind of amount for a cleaner aunty who has been suffering financially due to various reasons cannot be raised even in a week. Mind you this cleaner lady keeps the washrooms and hostels clean while that dog barks at night disrupting sleep and shits anywhere it wants to.

Because the cleaner aunty is a human and is able to raise Rs 20,000 by working, or fundraising , or meeting her local MLA. Whereas the dog is a voiceless, helpless creature who cannot go to a vet and pay the vet.

That's the whole point of animal rights. Standing for creatures who are literally voiceless, not metaphorically voiceless.

Regarding the dog barking at night, this is how they act as natural watchman. They keep our cities safe by barking at suspicious people. Have you bothered to find out why the dog is barking?

Also, our cities originally belong to animals. Humans have overpopulated the planet and destroyed the habitat of animals, taking over their forests and converting them into urban jungles. We call monkeys and dogs as a menace, but we are the real menace.

By any chance, have you lived in the same social strata as cleaner aunty and tried to do this? Get off your high horse mate. I've seen the plight of the downtrodden, so try and show a bit of compassion to a fellow human which you are showing in abundance to animals. Not saying we shouldn't care for animals, but be also considerate to humans, equally.
