Law and Order is a state subject. If it is a state subject, why should NLUs be cemtralized?
NLS rightfully deserves the tag of 'Hayward' of the East.
Later, the issue came up at the Karnataka High Court, during the NLSIU domicile reservation case. ASG Vikramjeet Banerjee (who is an NLSIU alum) appeared in the case. The argument NLSIU made (which was accepted by the court) is that only NLSIU is a national university, because Chief Justice of India is the chancellor. Others are state universities. But they conveniently forgot to mention is that some NLUs also have the CJI as Chancellor.
It’ll also improve legal education in India overall and help students from poor backgrounds get into NLUs, especially if there's a proper scholarship setup like in the IITs.
Right now, NLUs have a lot of issues like reservation problems in appointing profs, lack of steady state funding, admin mess, and even too many NLUs in the same state, which can ruin the value of the NLU tag.
We as students need to start questioning why NLUs haven’t been made INIs yet and seriously fight for nationalisation. This isn’t just about one college—it’s about fixing the future of legal education in India.
