Since NKC started his tenure, NUJS is on a constant downfall. There is rampant construction all around the tiny 5 acre campus which has led to the extinction of green cover in the campus, apart from destroying the minimal amount of public spaces that students had. The same construction has been going on for multiple amount of years while the deadline has passed way back, along with the tender going to the least efficient department i.e., PWD, with the cooperation of which NKC must be minting millions. The introduction of the BSc batch is a disaster in itself, where the fees of the newly introduced batch is close to double while they are being taught by sub-par faculty, some of whom are currently pursuing LLM at NUJS and are not even experienced professors. The implementation of the program was never thought about, which has led to the students of the existing B.A Llb program to suffer. NKC was confronted by the student body prior to the introduction of the BSc batch regarding their prospects in the corporate sphere and the assistance NUJS would provide as an institution to aid the same. However, NKC outrightly denied any assistances, citing that the program is a specialisation in the field of forensic science. However, after the admission of two batches since the introduction of the program, his stance has conveniently changed when it came to forming the Recruitment cell for the new program, putting the students of the prevailing B.A batch at a disadvantage by increasing the batch size by almost 2 times, and the number of opportunities being the same. Not only has he spoilt the future of the recently admitted batches, he had already endangered the careers of the batches of 2025 and 2026, by putting in place an arbitrary grading scale out of 10. Little did he know that he would have to also sensitise the faculty who had to mark these students according to the new 10-pointer scale, while they continued to mark them according to the old 7-pointer scale, leaving the batch topper of these batches to attain a maximum CGPA of 7.5 out of 10 because the criterion to achieve the highest grades was 95 out of 100, while the teachers barely awarded 70-80 marks to even the highest scoring student in that subject. He soon after realised that this would affect the image of the institution as a whole before the law firms, and more importantly. premium institutions abroad whose screening criteria requires students to have minimum CGPA OF 6 or 7, which is unattainable for the students of Batch of 2025 and 2026 due to the high benchmark set and the lack of sensitisation of faculty. Later, he had to change the threshold for the highest grades from 95 to 80, which is closer to the threshold of 75 that was used in the 7-pointer scale, to which the professors were accustomed to. Other ancillary aspects like lack of reimbursements for moots and ADR competitions, lack of sporting and medical facilities, arbitrary medical leave policy, and multiple attempts to derail the academic quality of the institution by replacing eminent professors with “Teaching Assistants” and numerous other things, have put the student body at a major disadvantage and the same has taken a large toll on their mental health and academic performance. It is high time that the administration starts looking for his replacement at the earliest, keeping in mind the UGC mandated age bar of 70 years which he is about to breach, to save the integrity of the institution.

Agree with the general point of the post and most of the deets. A few corrections.

A. PWD means the university did not hold a tender at all. Since technically it represents state government, hence it doesn't have to be awarded through tender. This is state PWD, which is even worse in terms of efficiency and charges way more.

B. Who are these LLM students who are teaching?

C. Faculty sensitisation won't help with the marks. In law, one cannot expect to score 90 out of 100. Too much subjectivity. This isn't science. The ten pointer scale was itself faulty. A MAKAUT tech guy had suggested that, who has since then been removed from the VC position even there.

D. Most important point, students are the main sufferers under his rule. Why aren't they protesting? Why aren't the alumni banding together like NLSIU alumni to push for a good VC? If they accept him meekly, why will the state bother?

Please change the title from "NKC has destroyed NUJS" to "TMC has destroyed NUJS". Because, prior to 2011, NUJS had:

- Menon, Chmini and MP Singh as VCs: all stellar academics and very honest people

- Top SC lawyers like KKV, Gopal Subramanian and Dipankar Gupta on the governing body

- No interference from the government in administrative and academic matters

- Erudite politicians like Jyoti Basu, Buddhadev Bhattacharya and Somnath Chatterjee backing the institution (two of them being UK-educated barristers) --- not semi-literate goons.

I won't spend time listing the other misdeeds. Will take me hours.

For me, the key date that will determine the future of NUJS will be March-May 2026. If the electorate votes for status quo, then I'd prefer that the college be shut down rather than operate like this.

Keep living in your dreams. NLS is not remotely cooked. Show me any other uni led by somebody with a master's and a PhD from oxford, and books published by both Oxford University Press and CUP. Show me another law university in India which is building the kind of research ethos NLS is. Then shoot off your mouth like this.

NLS hasn’t done anything notable in the past 5 years of Messiah apart from increasing the batch size and introducing new programs to make more money. They don’t even win moots anymore. Honestly, NLUD had far more research publications during the RS era with the same NLS faculty like Mrinal, Aparna and Arup than NLS has done in the past 6 years or so.

The VC's educational qualifications don't define the university, his administrative capability does. In that way, Sudhir hasn't really separated himself. As for research ethos, there is yet to be any evidence of that. No great research has been forthcoming from NLSIU in the last six years during Sudhir's tenure. However, I don't think that means NLSIU is doing any worse than the other law schools, who haven't really shown any such research either.

NLUD has fallen a lot during the last three years. Almost all their good faculty have left, no quality research is coming out anymore, only random seminars and talks, and the students are having problems too as evidenced by campus deaths. But because of its location and no direct government interference, they are still better than NUJS of course.

i would take a contray position:

- rampant construction: NUJS had to grow vertically as the space was limited, the construction has more than doubled the available floor space in the academic block; created new guest house, faculty quarters etc. New 14 storey AC hostels are also being constructed. Talks are ongoing to get the VSNL block next door for moving VC residence, sports faccilities and more quarters, would be completed this year whereby the campus size would grow to 7 acres. I agree it is taking a bit too long but as they day during metro constructions 'todays pain is tomorrows gain'

- PWD - most of the money for the construction came from WB govt (they have given over 100 crore in the last two years, about 5 crore was given by a reputed SC lawyer, some money was given by industry houses), it was WB givt which insisted that the executing agnecy be the PWD. ANy other VC would have highlighted all this but NUJS has always been a bit shy to beat its own drum.

- BSc - all NLUs are exapnding their student count, let us be honest, the only way for NLUs to pay salary for their lecturers and VC is to get money from tuition fee, with the UGC scale from 2018, it was impossible to pay salaries without doubling fees, however, all NLUs instead chose to double student numbers, now they needed cheap faculty otherwise the same problem recurs, so they hired TAs to do the tutorials etc. is it a good thing? absolutely not, I am not defending the situation merely explaining why. So the question is how did messiah do it - if you look at the fees structure and the amount of money they pay to the faculty members you would find out the answer, do some basic maths and you would find that they also employ TAs but their TAs are qualitiatively better

- gpa scale - it was an unmitigated disaster to change the gpa scale without appropriate checks, this is what happened when we get trapped into provicialism without necessary idea as to the wider market. the current EC has no one from the industry or anyone who has any degree from outside India or even PG degree (except the academic members), it is difficult for the EC to actually understand whatis going on and predict how gpa scale change would affect. the problem can be squarely led at the feet of the VC.

It is a state university - hence, everything happening is on expected lines. Things are not much better in NLS as well:
- 10 additional domicile seats for a mere 7 acres of leased land
- humongous batch size, with teaching variances across sections

- introduction of 3-year LLB programme

- introduction of a 3-year BA programme, making it an ordinary arts college (can you imagine being with arts students on campus)
- exorbitant fees, akin to daylight robbery
- a 25K CLAT ranker also studies in NLS

The list goes on........so chill.

Are NUJS kids daft, drugged or just trolling with fake news? There is absolutely no question of the VSNL property being handed over to NUJS. VSNL was a central Government company that was sold to the Tatas. Why will the Tatas gift the VSNL property to NUJS???

Those of you from Bengal: what are the chances of Mamata being voted out next year? What’s the sense on the ground? Will the RG Kar case or attacks against Bangladeshi Hindus make a difference? Or will the Muslim vote and welfare beneficiary vote see her through? And the anti-TMC vote split between the Left and BJP?

Is that really the case? Many faculty members have observed how readily NKC accommodates most student requests, like approvals are granted with remarkable ease, and courses undergo regular reviews. Even mass requests for paper re-evaluations have been allowed—something rare in most universities. He mostly forbids any kind of student punishment without due reason! Such a pro-student head of institute is rarely seen!

Please don't talk rubbish and justify the hiring of poor faculty. A large number of people teaching at NLSIU and Jindal are NLU alumni from Kolkata. Among social science faculty, places like JNU, TISS and the IITs are swarming with people from Bengal. Yet, NKC will hire terrible faculty and deliberately overlook the pool of good talent from Bengal -- for reasons all of you know.

I'm really disgusted to see the pro-NKC posts being put up here by vested interests.
