I completely agree with your perspective! The scope of legal tech is massive in my opinion. I can think of AI contract drafting and contract lifecycle management which many startups are already eying on. Apart from them lawfirm management tools are another opportunity. The present ones in the market are quite average for the price they charge. There are some American AI integrated law firm management softwares that actually bill firms around 1cr per year. I'm sure Indians can replicate the same thing at a much lower cost.
Apart from this, the biggest opportunity for legal tech is judiciary. The court systems and litigation as a whole in India is still a generation behind other industries when it comes to tech adoption. The use case scenarios are endless. But it will also be the toughest nut to crack as the entry barrier is too high. You need prominent lawyers and judges to back you if you want something implemented there or else getting an entry itself is so difficult.
My exposure to legal tech is still limited. I'm just a young 2PQE lawyer with a strong interest in tech and I'm very curious to explore more in legal tech specifically. I'm looking forward to a new path developing for lawyers away from the toxicity of law firms and litigation.
Yes, I used AI. And I have no problem saying that. This isn’t a writing competition; it’s a conversation about an industry that badly needs change. The ideas are mine — AI just helped express them better. I see AI as a tool that levels the playing field. If that makes some people uncomfortable, maybe it's because the usual gatekeeping—based on polished English or presentation—isn’t working anymore.
It’s a tool, like any other. Ignoring it doesn’t make you more authentic. It just makes you slower.
If you need innovation in this industry than be it anyone who solve the problem the background should not be a point... also you mentioned anyone from this industry hardly talk about tech in industry so there is need for someone from other industries to solve this ? please share your views ..
Legal tech is a buzzword for those who are comfortable with the current system and refuse to learn a new skill in the name of being a 'lawyer', what they don't understand is that legal tech can help this profession on every level, from college students to senior professionals.
I would love to hear the OP on his exposure to the legal tech.
But the legal field? It’s still largely stuck in the past.
Most of our systems are archaic, and honestly, there’s a general resistance among lawyers when it comes to adopting new technology. That hesitation might have made sense ten years ago—but not anymore. Because if tech is integrated thoughtfully into the legal ecosystem, the benefits could be massive. Think faster legal research, streamlined contract drafting, automated compliance tools, smarter dispute resolution, better client service, and even improved access to justice.
Now, couple that with what’s happening on the ground:
- Law schools are churning out thousands of new lawyers every year.
- Litigation remains hard to break into—nepotism, gatekeeping, and limited real mentorship are still very real issues.
- Law firms offer limited roles, and unlike tech companies, they aren’t scalable.
- In-house roles are growing, especially with new compliance and data protection frameworks, but not fast enough to absorb the growing talent pool.
So on one side, we have an oversupply of bright young lawyers looking for meaningful work. On the other, we have a legal industry still running on outdated systems that desperately need innovation.
This is where I think legal tech becomes more than just a buzzword. It could be the bridge.
If legal tech were to take off in India, it could create an entirely new category of roles—roles that are built by lawyers and for lawyers. Product development, knowledge engineering, legal ops, compliance automation, litigation analytics, legal AI training, and more.
Here’s the interesting bit: this is one of the few areas where non-lawyers can’t just waltz in and build disruptive tools without serious domain expertise. The legal profession is closed-off for a reason—it’s layered, technical, and highly contextual (Also because of other not so good reasons which I don't want to get into in this post). That gives us, as lawyers, a unique edge in shaping the future of this space. But unfortunately, not many of us seem to be doing that. At least not yet.
There’s barely any serious conversation happening around legal tech in Indian legal circles, which is surprising. Even Legally India, which has seen threads on everything from pay scales to campus placements, has next to nothing on legal tech.
So I thought I’d start one.
