Do you solemnly agree to all of the above?
First of all, we need to revisit the rule about single-sex hostels. All the top universities in the world abroad have mixed gender hostels and so should India. At least the elite universities. We can’t be like Saudi Arabia or Pakistan.
Secondly, if we’re to insist on this archaic rule, we need spaces for sexual privacy. It is absolutely ridiculous to deny students sexual freedom and autonomy. Sex is a basic human need and human right. It’s ridiculous what lengths the JGLS couple went to, just to get some sexual privacy. The girl could have been badly hurt.
Just shows that women can be the worst enemy of women and propagate misogyny and slut-shaming.
If you want to live with your boyfriend - maybe just take a house on campus instead of throwing all the other women under the bus.
Sex is not a basic human right or a need. No one died because they didn’t have sex. You cannot enforce a “right to sex” by forcing someone else to have sex with you. At best sex is a want. Adults can want and do whatever they like with other consenting adults. But adults also know that there is a time and place for things. No one is demanding that their workplaces have rooms for sex now are they ? That’s what a university is - it’s just the place you learn. It’s an unreasonable burden on the university to demand they create separate rooms for you to have sex in. And even if they did - how would they know who to let in ? Would they be liable if something were to go wrong ? There are 17 year olds on most campuses- what to do about them ? Do they give parties a form to denote consent ? Do you remember the Jgls sexual harassment/rape case from a few years back where the young girl was being blackmailed ? What happens when someone catches a disease in the room?
Why should the university assume any liability for all of this when they’re not the ones engaging in the behaviour?
Bottom line : if you’re old enough and mature enough to have sex- you should talk to your parents and figure out how to do it safely. If you don’t even have the courage to do that- you’re being ridiculous demanding it as a basic human right. Maybe if you actually studied law instead of thinking about sex all the time you would see how ridiculous this is.
if colleges were respectful of autonomy, there'd be designated hostels for women like you who do not want their hostels to have cross access. think and do better.
If you want Freedom like adults then behave like adults
All university is trying to do is limit their own liability. Y’all go out , party, get drunk , drive , assault each other whatever- until it’s all fun it’s just between y’all. But the moment something goes wrong your parents are shouting at university administrators and you’re demanding they protect you from being charged with crimes.
You either want freedom with all of its responsibilities or you don’t. I don’t care either way. Most administrators on campus couldn’t care less if you have sex or get drunk. What they care about is whether they will have to deal with consequences of your actions.
Now leaving campus without permission until a said hour makes sense because at the end of the day you are in a random small town in Haryana, I would not want to go out at night at all. Plus Jindal has had many tragedies like the car accident, and the rape case and the very aspect that it can happen justifies these calls.
Guys be grateful. Sex is great but the uni is not going to help you have it.
1. A guest house on campus where student couples can also book rooms on an hourly basis (for a reasonable rate).
2. 24x7 availability of condoms and contraceptives on campus (e.g. vending machine)
3. Availability of sexual health and relationship counsellors. At least one a week.
So it’s perfectly understandable if students want to have sex in a safe and hygienic place. It’s not just more convenient but also more responsible.
Those giving moral lectures really need to get a life. We are talking about consenting adults living in the 21st century. Both parents and the admin should promote safe sex: allow intimacy in hostels, sell condoms in the campus shop, have sexual health counselling etc..
Peoples paying 50 Lakhs for University but no 500 Rupees for a hotel? What is this? Tomorrow you ask for a partner (ze/hir/hirs) in name of exercising your autonomy. What your think you? A dictator? You think University is 50 cent (a self proclaimed someone)?
