2. The counselling needs to be available on every working day.
3. I think the cases of serious intervention cannot and should not be dealt with in, or by, the universities. Even the best universities of the world do not do that. However, what they do which we should learn to emulate is that they have established referal processes to the state health system when they realise that the mental health problem is serious (oh but of course, a priori assumption: the state health system functions!).
4. Universities need to have support systems in place for out of office hours needs as well. For example, partnerships with mental health hotlines.
The body of the departed soul was placed at the university around 3:30 PM on Thursday (classes were suspended for the afternoon) for students to pay their respects, yet the university authorities ▮▮▮ dismissed the students request to suspend classes for the next day since many of them were in huge distraught with the sudden passing of one of their batchmates. Classes were resumed the very next morning at 9 AM, completely ignoring the emotional grief of the students.
Once again, the university has made it crystal clear that holding classes is far more important ▮▮▮. It is high time that serious attention be paid to the mental health of the student community, rather than treating it with ignorance.
