Such is the question.
If you’ve gotten into National Law School, Bangalore, then honestly, without a doubt — go there. The kind of exposure and opportunities you’ll get, especially in terms of faculty and the overall environment, is on another level. Even if you’re not super academically inclined right now (at 17, 18, or whatever age), it will make a huge difference in the long run.
NUJS, in comparison, has a fairly insipid faculty lineup. Maybe one or two are relatively decent, but even they aren’t particularly standout. The administration is also quite difficult to deal with.
Sure, the student pool across top ranks is somewhat similar, so you’ll have good peers either way. But NLS offers something more — just being around people working in legal anthropology, ethnographic research, social justice, and so on. Even if you're pursuing mainstream legal careers, being in that kind of space opens up new ways of thinking. Over five years, that matters.
Of course, NLS has its flaws too — it’s a public institution, so there will be politics and the usual messiness. But if you just look through their News and Events page, the kind of things that happen there regularly are amazing. Even by osmosis, you’ll grow a lot.
I understand if you have personal reasons for wanting to stay in Kolkata, but really — Bangalore is just a short flight away. And with the trimester system, you get enough breaks to come back home, do internships in Kolkata, etc. You’ll be able to balance things out.
Anyway, just wanted to say this openly — I really hope you choose the path that’s right for you. But if you’re deciding between these two, my vote is strongly for NLS.
From the very beginning I've wanted to join NUJS,but now with my rank I can also get NLS but the thing is I'm still leaning towards NUJS due to a certain non-academic reason (personal reasons....you may make a guess :-) ).
So is choosing NUJS over NLS a big mistake?
I mean idk...NUJS has better placements and stuff....and I don't have a problem with NUJS campus...
At the end of the day I've to spend 5 years in my college,so considering that,is choosing NUJS over NLS really self sabotaging or is the difference minimal?
(My reason for preferring NUJS as I said is personal...and driven not by logic)
