- Oldies play it (the anti-woke generation that dumps on Gen Z all day long)
- This generation has made pickleball elitist by playing in posh clubs and gated communities, and also making retailers sell cheap-ass plastic equipment for high prices (Gen Z hates elitism)
- Pickleball is played by old tennis legends who Gen Z doesn't know about and can't relate to, like Agassi, Steffi Graf, Roddick etc.
As for the Olympics, they will include pickleball because the purchasing power and influence of Gen X and Gen Y are higher than Gen Z (on a per-capita basis at least). We had a new Gen Z sport in the Paris Olympics (breaking). Turned out to be a big flop.
The reason it is popular is because it is not a very technical game, like tennis, and the basics are easy to learn. Also games are quite short.
Far from the mediative focus that traditional racquet sports offers and demand, Pickleball takes it to eleven by providing you enough time between returns and smashes to scan for your prospective muse, both personal and professional, for a financial year.
It is the Black Eyed Peas of racquet sports. In the unforgettable words of Robert California “it’s rock and roll for people who don’t like rock and roll; it’s rap for people who don’t like rap…”
But seriously, it’s perfectly understandable. It’s very hard to find decent places to socialise in India. Law firms offer no good opportunities for socialising and recreation either.
