This urgency in the profession can't be changed. It is the need of the client who is stuck in a problem.

You think it's toxicity. It isn't. Its your mindset. If you dont understand what litigation is, better leave it.

urgency isn't the same as round-the-clock availability at ALL times. Urgent situations arise, yes, but they aren't as frequent as you are making of them.

When litigating, one has the privilege to act upon their will. You needn't virtue signal someone to make them understand how the profession works. They do them, and they are good enough to look after them, which is part of the reason why they are litigating in the first place. But older people like you who are as acquainted with exploiting free labour can't gulp the fact that people can be doing well in life while not dragging their ass at all times like you did. It isn't advice that you offer, it's jealousy that you inflict.

Then you should work at a senior advocates office or a busy chamber. Then you will understand what urgency means. Problem is thinking too high of oneself. Seriously dude, litigation is a tough practice area. You seriously don't even have an idea how a busy chamber works. fake deadline ko justify karne ki khani. everyone in litigation know that there is urgency. But the real problem is pay that is equivalent to pay of a skilled laborer (Delhi) or even low. Everyone in the chamber slogs their as@ off but the real advantage in term of like Getting chance to argue or present case. In most senior chambers or other chamber, junior are only left with getting date or passovers with no real growth either professionally or financially.

Dear Beta - do explain to us old hags how you will do so, when many of you and your ilk are unable to draft a letter competently and punctuate properly, leave alone handle clients and strategise for matters. Dear uncle- I will do so by pushing back on false deadlines & by not delegating things to my juniors at the last minute. ALSO, if my generation collectively pushes back on false/unreasonable deadlines (which they will. Believe me they will coz all of us collectively believe in WLB)- then no client will have their unreasonable expectations met. Infact, clients will also be one of us- so no unreasonable expectations at all. Think about it- with you guys, shouting and abusive/toxic culture was the norm. Things have substantially changed now. Similarly WLB will also come one day.

Dear Beta, you seem totally unaware of the realities of our profession. In two months, my firm receives 10,000 applications for internships. I receive roughly half that in the same time period for Associateship. Many many of those who apply are bright and hardworking. The ones I recruit are serious and committed to their work and display zeal to work hard whenever required.

Hence, your assumption that the rest of your generation is “with you” is unfounded. In fact, your buddies must be telling you “ya bro, screw the overlords”, but in reality, they will be working like beasts and ensuring they secure their future. Don’t get left behind beta. Receiving an Associate/internship application or realities of profession is not equivalent of comparing an argument regarding work-life balance. There is a fallacy in your whole argument it like comparing apple with oranges, while work-life balance/hallmark of a good organization purely depends upon how good an individual/organization in the following things including but not limited to Managing His/her employees/juniors, Managing workflow, addressing feedback for and by employee/junior, giving good work like arguing, drafting, negotiation etc (assuming if senior is getting one which mostly they get), not pushing false deadline ( except in the cases of urgent bail matters or urgent filing received in very very short span of time, etc. It is pertinent to note that a person might have the highest of legal acumen, knowledge, adept in court craft or managing client but does mean that person might be good in managing the organization or its employee/junior, as for the reason IQ and EQ are different. Most law firm partner and seniors lack EQ and managerial skills that why highest attrition rate in firms/ chamber which is sign of toxic work culture and inefficient management

Now, if we approach towards the receiving enormous internship/job applications that only indicates difference in supply and demand of legal work and jobs, which firm/ chambers are exploiting. Gone are times where people accede to toxic work culture, peanuts pay, no real work etc

I am sure kids in their 5th grade have a better grasp over English and are more aware of incorrect punctuations.

Wish there was some way we could call this nonsense out rationally, reasonably, calmly, point-by-point and not anonymously. What's the point of a so-called "marketplace of ideas" if there cannot be a genuine clash of ideas as a fair fight? Playing devil's advocate here; it is evident the OP/commentators here haven't seen what the post actually says. This is solely for those engaging in LITIGATION. It's evident that people here are mostly corp lawyers.....I'm a junior lawyer and in places like Delhi, seniors often get briefed late until night and you're expected to be available 24/7. As this senior partner says, there are many, many lawyers in a country; if you don't wake up at 3AM, someone else is willing to. Not supporting this practice, but in crowded nations like India and China, this is unfortunately how it is.

Typical third-world mentality. When the going gets tough, you leave. Tell me, that “developed nation” where you think it “[m]akes sense” to migrate, how did that nation become “developed” in the first place? After all, that nation was not always “developed”. How did the people living there do it? Did they also run away, like you? No! They cared enough about themselves and their fellow folks that they put in the work and the struggle to create a better world. They failed many times before succeeding. And they certainly did not build that world for intelligent/clever cowards from third-world to come scurrying to, the same cowards who are too timid to change their own world, too corrupt to recognize their own complicity in the corruption of their society, too lazy to do an honest day‘s worth of labour and too incompetent to even make the smallest struggle to make their world a better one. My problem with your post is that you assume that someone saying that hard work is necessary equates to toxicity. It does not.

There are many of us 'oldies' who have worked really hard for 20+ years, and this has involved many instances of cancelled plans at the last minute, missing out on parties and birthdays and other fun events, sometimes letting down our loved ones, seeing acquaintances drift away, bouts of anxiety and depressive behaviour, and many other 'sacrifices'. We are also very aware that we would not have been able to get to where we are now without this hard work. In many fields (including law), if you want to be successful professionally, this will be the price.

You can choose that this is not what you want, that you want to prioritize personal time, and that is ok.

Do also be aware that, by the time people turn 35 or 40, professional achievements (and consequently, financial position and ability to provide for the family, send the kids to good schools, go on family holidays, have a nice house) tend to mean more to many people than having attended a few additional concerts or seen many movies or hung out with buddies. It's just that this occurs much later, and right now you will not be able to visualise this stage of your life. Again, this is just a perspective and the ultimate decision on how you want to work and live your life is yours. Just stop thinking that hard work is toxic.

hello op here, once a month of urgency in the current system would make sense if one wants to have a luxurious life as we live in a capitalist society. but having to compromise WLB everyday is what we actually have a problem with.

the post straight up stating "throw WLB out for ten years" "available at all times" is what is scary.

i hope things change but at the same time with the constant growing population of india, it is bleak even if the younger generations stands up for it as hard as they can.
