Given its description as “focusing on the interface between policy, social sciences, and the law” and based on following parameters, what is the consensus on this programme that has been on since 2014? (1) Placement opportunities and alumni network; (2) academic rigour of the coursework; (3) strength and quality of the teaching faculty; (4) reasonableness of the programme fee; (5) academic and intellectual relations with other programmes at NLSIU; (6) your final recommendation on balance of everything considered here and any other relevant factor not mentioned here.

1) Generally Poor, institutes like TISS Mumbai have way better placements, permit year round internships unlike NLSIU

2) Relatively High, 75% attendance is critical, plus all the crap like multiple term papers, random exercises etc in each trimester

3) Faculty is okaish, other places like JNU, TISS will have better faculty though

4) Can't comment as I do not have exact placement CTC figures

5) Infact MPP has virtually no relation to the BA LLB or even the LLB, some electives are shared and that's about it

6) I would not recommend it personally, go only if you have not got TISS, Jindal, ISB etc.

It's a pretty good program and among the very few with actual good public policy programs but I would advice you to check out IIT Bombay's MPP , IIM Bangalore's PGDPPM ( Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and/in Management ) . The Development Studies programs at IIT Guwahati , IIT Madras and TISS are good as well and they have a lot of overlap with Public Policy courses ( so placement wise , you won't get the exact role but the body of work you would do will be pretty similar with your peers from MPP ) and NLS's program is good enough and there's no hard schism with B.A.LLB students and LLB students . The department may not seem high ranked at first but NLS as a school is pretty good at interdisciplinary programs and overall the quality of teaching is better than all NLUs out there ( yes , even NLU Delhi but some professors are not that good but that's exception rather than norm , most people in NLS , at least at faculty , can do what they know of and that's all you need at this stage ) but make sure you like this coz MPP though may seem rewarding , the work itself is pretty taxing and writing a dissertation is tough ( like any dissertation )

Thank you for providing perspective. Just a minor query regarding PGDPPM at IIM Bangalore. I think it goes by a new name now, Post-Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management (PGPPM). According to its latest brochure for 2024 admission, available at << https://www.iimb.ac.in/programmes/pgppm >>, only members of All India Services, Central Services, State Civil Services, and Non-State Civil Services are eligible to apply.

Somehow I do not think IIT Kharagpur cares enough about the social sciences to actually run a comprehensive programme. The one that they have recently started, Master's in Public Policy Law and Governance << https://gateoffice.iitkgp.ac.in/mpplg/ >>, seems a desperate attempt to join the trend of offering expensive (over-priced?) public policy programmes that focus on working professionals and who ultimately turn out to be government officials most of the time.

As for IIT Delhi, they appear to have a decent faculty << https://spp.iitd.ac.in/faculty >> and they have also focused on doctoral research in public policy. But it is too early to assess its value. Being an IIT and being in the national capital certainly helps though.

The consensus is that nobody cares. MPP is the most shat-on programme in NLSIU. Alumni network is non existent, and so is placements. Academic rigour is there, if you include fighing with the admin for acco as rigour. As with all courses at NLS, the fee is unreasonably high. And MPP Programme seems to be completely cut off from the rest of the student body. Verdict: Hell naw
