They get to be in good chambers and have info about which are the good one since their college peeps would have worked at decent place. The community is close knit. For me, there is no community, and very big info gap. So I feel a bit bheind. Not sure how to make connections then…

Looks like quite a few members of the NLU gang have taken exception to my advice. Rest assured, I meant every word of it. You cannot hide behind your CLAT ranks for the rest of your lives, fellows. No one place, not even your beloved NLU, has a monopoly on competence and integrity.

we aren't hiding behind our CLAT ranks, we're wielding our alma matter, the best in the country, to our advantage. You may try to find some consolation in your cries of competence and integrity, but fact of the matter is, we already have them both, and a lot more in our favour. There's a reason why CLAT ranks matter, why your education matters. All the big guns know it, and that is sufficient for us to keep upping our game.

If you or your alma mater were truly the “best” in the country, dear fellow, then the country would not be the abyss that it is today. You mistake the citation in your degree as your contribution to your fellow man and woman. It is not. Your problem is that living in a society of scarcity, you confuse your own luck in surviving that scarcity as a proof of your merit. When in fact, your (relatively) isolated existence from all the misery and poverty and misgovernance under which your fellow citizens suffer is an indictment of all that you claim to be. Part of your success is that so many others can never even compete with you because they are too busy trying to survive poverty, stampede, flooding, custodial torture, etc. You know this but instead of acknowledging your own complicity and working to remedy it, you choose instead to engage in a game of semantics. You pretend that success is something only personal, that achievement can only be private. This is how you justify your relative wealth. This is how you forget that you have failed to contribute in your own profession. You have made money, yes, and lots of it too. But you have not improved the world into which you have made that money. You have failed to establish the rule of law where people are not terrified of police and judges. You have given up the responsibility that men and women owe to each other as part of the social contract in creating a civilised discourse. So yes, please enjoy your success. But remember, your children will inherit the same unjust world into which their parents compromised their ideals just so that they could survive a little better than others.

If you're marginalized in an NLU you are kept away from all those accumulated privileges . I can vouch for it, myself. I'm in a so called top NLU, with the best corporate placement record but inspite of that I'm struggling to find a job, I've struggled to find internships because of the discrimination I face due to my gender identity. I know when I'll say it a lot of people will start abusing me, I'm used to it. Trans people is a debate to a lot of people and not people for a lot of y'all. But the reason I brought this up is because your college tag doesn't protect you from discrimination within or outside it that much if you do not come from a lot of privilege otherwise. Hardwork, consistency and discipline of course matter a lot but opportunity too does and opportunity my friend comes to selected people first and gets called their merit. This whole NLU non NLU hierarchy is obsolete because the system is majorly based on how much privilege one has.

Barring NLSIU (because of alumni reputation and Sudhir’s infusion of good faculty) the NLU brand has become heavily diluted. Most of these colleges have have terrible faculty, incompetent admin, more reserved seats than unreserved ones, poor academic standards because of grade inflation and mediocre placements. Not to forget that every third roadside college has an NLU tag nowadays, cheapening the value of the NLU tag.
