For GST - Understand what qualifies as a 'Supply'. Then slowly make your way to Input Tax Credit and then e-way bills. If you have friends pursuing CA and who are articles in IDT - ask them to explain what the various returns in GST (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2A/2B, GSTR-9, etc.) These are your basics. As a lawyer you don't need to know how to file returns, BUT it it is critical to understand these returns and basis behind filing each of them. Especially since disputes at the adjudicatory level do not include a lot of interpretation of law but majorly include disputes arising out of these returns.
Don't rush things. Give yourself enough time to understand it.
For Customs Law - Understand the basic concepts like what is import, export, bill of entry, shipping bills, etc. Customs has a lot of HSN classification issues- so read the General Rules of Interpretation. Find cases on HSN classification and see how these Rules of Interpretation come into play.
