A profession’s public image is determined, in most parts, at the most immediate level on which those outside of that profession interact with its representatives. In the case of law, that would be the district judiciary and the whole set of legal professionals that one meets there. If you haven’t already, please do visit your local district court, even if just to observe. The conditions are not optimal. The physical infrastrucutre is not sufficient for the amount of work happening there. The quality and ethics of officers of the court inevitably suffers when you realise that most of them (even the best among them) received their education from state universities which themselves have hardly any resources to impart education of any kind. They then joined a profession that requires time, patience, and relentless work to succeed while maintaining a facade of ethical commitment at all times. To top it all, they practise their profession in a predominantly poor country where the abiding principle of social life is that of scarcity. And in accordance with that principle, the law is not an instrument of justice and harmony but power and interest, a zero-sum game. This is a vicious loop for it degrades even those who survive by degrading others. It is a world very far from the adolescent fantasy of NLUs.
