Hi everyone! I have a decent enough rank to get into both of the institutions. I want to go for NLS but the situation seems too hazy for now. I had applied for NLU D and have the admission offer should I gamble my 50K with regards to this situation.(Apologies for any errors and TIA!)

Lol, NLUD is the obvious choice. I’m surprised how this is even a matter of debate but it goes to show the ignorance among law students these days. No domicile quota so the crowd is more meritorious, smaller batch sizes so opportunities are more for individual students. Only areas where NLS is better are alumni, which frankly won’t matter in the short term of getting through law school and getting jobs since both colleges have equally good opportunities and have to compete with equally competent kids from other NLUs. Faculty also, NLS is better, but they have nearly 3 times as many students and frankly, despite some students complaining, NLUD faculty is better than nearly every other NLU. Ask anyone from the old NLS batch sizes of 80 and they’d unequivocally trade their present situation with what NLUD offers. That’s a fact, not an opinion.

As a student of the batch of ‘29 I can attest to the fact that around 10 of my batchmates made the decision to choose NLU-D over NLS and that number has been increasing ever since. Aside from the reasons the other person on this thread mentioned Delhi is overall a far better place to be for anything law related. That is a no brainer. The 300+ batch size has lead to dilution in quality and most do not really get good profs. At the same time there would be a heightened competition to represent the college and for positions within. NLU-D has a focused student body, you are well integrated with the great city of Delhi, the national capital having the Supreme Court, prominent centres, think tanks, reasarch orgs as opposed to a suburb in bangalore which is known for the most part for its clubbing culture. It is the place to be and also given the less than ideal quality of the CLATs for ‘24 and ‘25 you are going to get the cream of the crop here.

NLUD students have been keeping that pretense up for long. Yet there is no NLUD batch which has ever performed better than any NLSIU batch till date. As on date, other than location, NLUD has got no advantage whatsoever and even the location advantage is of no help careerwise since that doesn't let the NLUD students intern throughout the year unlike GLC etc. The NLUD faculty other than a few rare exceptions like Danny and Yogesh are really mediocre now. The leadership has been uninspiring since RS left. The placement scene is not even within top 5. The campus culture is really toxic as the student deaths show clearly. Their governing body members bicker among themselves openly. Rest are all PR.

Clearly someone who is not from NLUD, never had even the option to study there and picks up all his info on NLUD from this site or Reddit probably. The student suicides were proven to have had nothing to do with the law school environment per se and despite that, academic standards have been relaxed and mental health measures have been prioritised. Unfortunate coincidence that 3 suicides happened within a few months whereas not one single incident in the past 18 years before that. And this placements argument is a bit rich considering how all the older but mediocre NLUs like GNLU etc have larger batch sizes and NLUD is today competing with way more law schools for limited jobs compared to what early NLS batches were.

You who declared yourself as an NLUD student, knows enough about NLSIU to comment that most of their students do not get good teachers without any evidence whatsoever, but when someone comments about documented student problems and deaths at NLUD and on the record bickering about it between your governing body members, then you get salty. It's clear who is not getting good teachers. Especially when you do not have ANY good teacher known for their work except 2-3 people now left at NLUD. Compared to NLSIU, who have a large number of such people.

As for placement records, if even after 17 years of starting, you have to resort to such excuses to account for your less than par placement scene, then that's enough evidence to show the state of your university.

Don’t keep justifying yourself with these inane excuses, it’s embarrassing. Once the premise is accepted that NLUD has fared better, there’s nothing else to say. And in that case, NLUD could give a million reasons why it couldn’t compete with older NLUs but it has literally been better than most of them in half as much time of its existence.

There is no NLUD batch that outshines NLS, NALSAR or even NUJS or NLU J for that matter. Heck placement wise even GNLU is giving a run for its money to NLS and NALSAR. NLU D bubble is only in mind of its students/alum, who are so free that they keep on beating about it on legallyindia.

What do you mean by batch outshining another ? What gives you the confidence to make such absurd bold claims? What metric are you using? What real data do you have? Are you taking into account the differential priorities and aspirations of students in different NLUs? The different batch sizes ? Whether they have domicile or not. Your statement is essentially meaningless. And this vague batch shining quotient you have created may have nothing to do in the list of reasons why one may choose Delhi over bangalore or vice versa especially the current context of the CLAT and AILET, the individuals expectations from law school? Geographical preferences and so many more. So

Geez, calm your tits, pal. I don't really care for this debate, if the kid wants to choose NLS, let him go ahead by all means, he won't be losing anything and NLS is arguably still the best in the country. But whatever's been said about NLUD as far as location, domicile and all are facts. And what is with this batch outshining a batch nonsense? Every NLUD batch can easily go toe to toe with all the older NLUs, ultimately, it comes down to individual effort in building one's legal career.

No single student in my knowledge has ever preferred NLUD over NLS Bangalore in last 15 years. No wise person will do it now. This kind of thread is useless.

NLSIU is the No. 1 law school of India and it will remain so for next few decades. I don’t see any possibility of NALSAR or NUJS or NLUD come anywhere close to it. Thanks.

Constantly this prediction has been made... and what has been the result? Placements: still good. Foreign firm hiring: still happening steadily. Rhodes Scholarship: happened recently, that too awarded to a student of the programme which is Sudhir's brainchild, the one you all said would produce crap quality graduates. Instead what? Despite all your crying, it has produced somebody who is scholarly, kind, well-rounded and eminently a better person than every single talking head on this thrice-damned site. Will you please just shut up, admit that you are failures and carry on with your lives? Gosh! You are even more pathetic than the person whom Hasan Minhaj referred to as "Beky with the bad grades". At least she had the guts to file a case (forget about merits or otherwise of the lawsuit) against the U.T. system. All you do is come on an anonymous forum and bitch about a person whose boots you aren't worthy to lick, hoping that one of your attempts will stick. Why not accuse him of a crime and have done with it? Oh! I forgot! NUJS people who tried to harm him with fireworks have already tried that stunt, and failed. So this is the best you can do.

Precisely the mentality we need. Someone who didn't go for IIT becomes a sarkari babu, so we are obligated to genuflect at the mere mention of him, and show utter supplication to him. Is this the best PR NLUD can come up with? Come on - the mediocrity of PR - a type of mediocrity of which Jindal is the trend-setter - has infected NLUD as well! You are better than this guys! Tell me about the guy who left IIT for NLUD and became the global managing partner of a world-wide law firm.

There is a common pattern that settles the point beyond doubt. Other NLU students and alumni, including practitioners also agree that NLS is a fantastic place to study at, perhaps the best in the country. On the other hand, only NLUD students and alumni believe that NLUD is the best place to study law at. That makes all the difference.
