I know most of us wait until late 20s or early 30s or don't get married at all. I have been dating my girlfriend, (who I know I want to beg the question to) and for quite some time now, 4 years in college and 2 years post that. I am still 24, and I know a lot of people think this may be too early (heck my parents got married in their late 20s so no pressure there as well yet). She may also very well be aboard (a lot of ifs and buts, so assuming yes it is on).

Thus, need a reality check folks, I know as an A2 - A3, these are the hay days, where you put your head down and work your ass off. Thus, seniors, who are married, give me a reality check. A good call?

Marriage has its perks, I believe so (yeah don't want this to be a debate about pros and cons of marriage as an institution but rather about the how it will affect my work or my perceptions).

"I don't want to be that guy." A lot of people presume a lot of things in this industry about you for eg. if you are married, there will be certain obligations and you may not be able to devote yourself to your work so let's not rely on him as much.

Don't think so much. If you've been with the person for 6 years - she already understands your work timings and pressure. You shouldn't let work impact these decisions. You'll find your ways to ensure she gets her due.

I know you won’t want to hear this but as a man in a good job, think very carefully before marrying (whether now or in the future). You might be in love and might think your girlfriend loves you (which may even be true at this time) but the chances of a marriage breaking down are now in excess of 50%, at which point it is also highly unlikely that your former wife continues to treat you reasonably when it comes to the division of assets and custody of any children you may have.

The divorce laws, and more importantly their current implementation, are loaded against men in good jobs. You are entering into a contract with a greater than 50% chance of termination, that contains a termination clause that will strip you of staggering amounts of earned and inherited wealth, and a method of termination that will likely result in the imposition of false criminal cases against you, your parents and male siblings. Lastly, there is no method that is fully within your control to mitigate this risk. As a lawyer, ask yourself whether you would advise your client to sign that contract.

Some might argue that no misfortune will befall your marriage if you are a good, loving human being. Sadly, this is far from the truth. The people we chance upon in our lives and the courts to which they drag us very often have little regard for our inherent decency and kindness. I speak from experience, my own and that of many of my peers, most for whom divorce came after 10/15/20 + years of marriage.

Chances are you won’t heed this, which is natural, since we tend to learn from our own experiences, not from those of others, however salutary. Besides, I am but an anonymous voice in the ether.

In ending, I do hope you have no adverse experiences in your prospective marriage, but don’t jump in with all four paws too quickly. Safety first, and always. All the best.

After a long marriage (not arranged, I hesitate to call it a love marriage in hindsight, though it began as one) and a divorce, I have a new partner but won’t be re-marrying. I’m sorry if that isn’t the answer that you were expecting based on whichever stereotypes you have adopted.

I got married at 27 and I had wondered if it was too soon. It wasn't. Do not compare your situation with your peers. Lawyers are well known to compromise on life and home for their careers. If you guys are comfortable with each other, and have an idea how it is to spend life together, go for it.

Also, you would be surprised that men are lucky that they do not have to face the bias for being married. Women have to face that too often and it is unfair.

Another way of looking at it is that whenever you get married you'll have those obligation and responsibilities. When you are relatively senior, you'll always be accountable to partners and clients and the wedding preps and other stuff will be harder. Do it right now if you're sure of the person as they'll be a pillar of strength for you to achieve what you want over time and you'll also get some time before pressure of having kids.

One possible reason you may want to put it off for now is if you are in a T1, and if you may be able to save up substantially in a couple of years, it will take care of some part of the expenditure.

Do it. Youve found someone youve been with for 6 years and want to be with for many more. Whatever opportunities life throws at you- grow with each other and accomodate each other. Its extremely difficult to form emotional attachments as you grow older and even harder to deal with all the baggage the other person might be bringing in. Best to marry young and stay married.

I got married at 27, and was the first one to do so in my circle and so was the case for my wife and her friends. We have thought about this a lot of time, if we did get married very early. But from my perspective, I did find the love of my life and was sure that wanted to spend the rest of the life (however it turned out to be) with her! Wasn't letting that chance slip away for anything.

Did it affect my career progression? Hell yes! My partner has been my biggest motivation pushing me to excel and providing me the much needed emotional support. If not for her, I wouldn't be half the lawyer and entirely the person I am today!

All I'm saying is, you'll grow irrespective if you're ambitious enough! But to have the love of your life by your side and grow together through life is a beautiful feeling.
