NKC isn't nervous about NAAC. He doesn't want bad press etc during the visit, which can be weaponised during the EC meeting in December. He is certainly getting an extension although he would preferred the age cap to go. Next best thing - get enough time and opportunity from EC to instal a plaint/friendly successor and get re-appointed as a Chair Prof and grace the EC. Also conduct another round of recruitment and construction deals in the interim.
SJA needn't always protest. But why does it even exist?
- It is not a letter sent to all alumni (so far). Only a small number of LLM and PhD alumni have been invited (so far). Not clear whether this is a breach of UGC rules, because the rules seem leave it to the good faith of the admin to decide who to invite and how.
- The letter has been leaked to the WhatsApp group of our alumni batch. It was not directly sent to us by the admin. Not clear if anyone can walk in and if it is an open interaction
- Date of NAAC visit is 27th November.
- Current discussion in our WhatsApp group is as follows:
a) Those in Kolkata should visit, despite the short notice
b) The interaction should not be limited to a few LLM/PhD students plucked by the admin. The BALLB students are the backbone of the institution and most numerous as well.
c) However, no one wants a situation where you walk in and are either asked to leave for not being invited, or are just given 1 minute to speak with the NAAC committee. That is humiliating and insulting to people who are going to take time off from work and make the visit. We are now working professional, not students, and deserve some respect and courtesy.
Hence, the VC should urgently clarify about the format of the interaction.
