Ah, my dear friend. You're done. Finito. First sem gone haywire, no committees, no connections, no senior homies? Forget the dream job. In fact, you should probably prepare for a future as that person—you know, the one who says, “I was in law school once,” while narrating your tragic story to kids who only asked for the Wi-Fi password. 😜

But hey, just kidding. Relax, take a deep breath. This is literally just the beginning.

Yes, I know, the first semester feels like the apocalypse. Everyone seems to have everything figured out—grades, committees, internships, secret maps to Hogwarts-level career tricks from seniors. But trust me, it’s all a mirage. Most people are just winging it, and so can you (with a bit of strategy).

Here’s the deal, (which is from my personal experience):

1. Grades are not the endgame. Sure, you need to stay above the "we'll see you next semester if you pass" level. But anything between an 8 and a 10 GPA is fine.

3. Committees don't really matter. Many committees are about showing up when people start dropping out. No experience? Be shameless. Everyone starts somewhere. Volunteer like you’re desperate (because, let’s face it, you kind of are), and committees will eventually let you in. Plus, future recruitments don’t ask if you joined late. I started in committees from my third year and became the student head of the mooting committee in the 5th year so, LOL.

5. You are right, seniors are important. But doesn't mean you need to gel with every senior. You just need one helpful soul. Engage with them on specific topics—what they like, their internships, or even your confusion. As an aside, most seniors enjoy the ego boost of being treated like experts, so they’ll spill their tips if you ask nicely. Personal experience :)

7. Connections? Build them outside. Internships are goldmines for networking. I didn’t come from a T1 NLU—in fact, I was in a T3 private university. First sem? Total disaster. But by my third year, I’d figured out how to maneuver internships and pick up connections. A great example. I was interning at a district court and an independent lawyer who was against my senior in one of the cases I was observing helped me land an internship at a T1 firm which I turned into a PPO. It happens, trust me.

So chill. The fact that you’re already reflecting and asking for advice means you’re ahead of most people who think vibing their way through law school will cut it. You’ve got time. Focus on learning and showing up. Everything else will follow.

Okay so I am from a T1 NLU and had high hopes,but I messed up my 1st sem as in I am getting just passing grades in my 1st sem exams and also I am not part of any committee or society of my NLU, (I didn't sign up for any OC work earlier and now every OC work is requiring past experience,which I got none) and unlike my batchmates I don't even have any frndship or homie type relationship with any of my seniors in my college,so I don't even have access to any of the tips and tricks which seniors tell to my batchmates.

I am first gen,so got no connections in legal fraternity as well and got to know that for landing a good job u need good grades or good connections and I got none of the two.

So I am pretty worried about my future as a whole,was always an academically bright student but I have failed to perform that well here and also feel pretty left out for the above mentioned reasons.

Kindly do suggest me some course of actions as I don't want to end up like a failure and I am willing to make amends as well for the same.
