BD trips are limited to some very senior partners in some firms and more spread out in other firms. So whether one has gone for an international trip or not may not be the best benchmark / comparison for you.
In respect of your question - the venues for these trips depend on where the existing or target clients are and will generally be the usual business hubs like NY/ SF, London, Germany, SG, HK, Middle East, Korea. These are generally all expenses paid trips which include accommodation (expect decent mid tier hotels of top brands), food (reasonable limits unless it's a client meeting) and transportation. Since it's usual for a partner to be on these trips - it's expected that outlandish/ unreasonable expenses won't be incurred since they are answerable for these.
